TUTORIAL SHEET No. 9 - LIMITS FITS & TOLERANCES

1. A shaft has basic diameter 60mm. Its maximum and minimum sizes are 59.8mm and
59.7mm. Find its fundamental deviation zone and IT grade tolerance.
2. A spindle is specified dimension as 50±0.005. Recommend a suitable manufacturing
process
3. Calculate maximum and minimum sizes of the holes and shafts for the fundamental
tolerances given as
i. 45G7 ii. 50H8
iii. 80JS7 iv. 60h8
v. 35d7 vi. 95m6
4. A bracket as shown in Figure 1 is to be sand casted. Give suitable tolerances

Figure 1
5. A stepped shaft is shown in Figure 2 is to be machined in mass production on a capstan
lathe. Give suitable tolerances

Figure 2
6. Limits of the shaft and hole are as under
Maximum shaft diameter = 60.00mm; Minimum shaft diameter = 59.98mm
Maximum hole diameter = 60.005mm; Minimum hole diameter = 60.002mm
Calculate the following:
i. Tolerance of the shaft ii. Tolerance of the hole
iii. Type of fit
7. Figure 3 below schematically shows the tolerances of the shafts by hatched area and on
holes by shaded area. Define the type of fit

Figure 3
8. Suggest size for a shaft to allow a fit of H8-f8 for a hole of 40mm
9. A hole of 45mm is dimensioned for maximum and minimum diameters as 45.025mm and
45.000mm respectively. Maximum and minimum shaft diameters are 44.991mm and
44.975mm. find the following
i. Basis of fit system ii. Tolerance grade of the hole
iii. Tolerance grade of the shaft iv. Type of fit
