Đây là điều mà cuốn “From Basics to Band 6.0” đã trình bày rõ ràng, tuy
nhiên “Elevate to Band 8.0” còn tích hợp ba điểm nâng cấp vượt trội sau.
Vậy nên, “Elevate to Band 8.0”
giày” như ở quyển “From Basics to Band 6.0”.
Mình mong “Elevate to Band 8.0” nói riêng và series “IELTS Writing Journey” nói chung

In IELTS Writing Task 1, you are asked to write a short essay summarizing and describing
the data from a chart or graph. You have 20 minutes to complete this task; your essay
should be at least 150 words long. The IELTS Writing Task 1 question typically follows:
“Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make
comparisons where relevant.”

Key Takeaways:
There are two main types of charts or graphs: Static and Dynamic. In Static
Charts, the data stays the same and does not change over time, while in
Dynamic Charts, the data can change.

We will follow these steps to write an introduction for any Task 1 essays.
1. Step 1
Identify the elements in the question, including:
2. Step 2
Write your introduction following the structure:
2. Step 2
Note:
1. When writing the introduction, it is advisable to be specific. This makes it easier for the
readers to picture the chart in their minds. Therefore, even though the original question
does not mention “six different age groups,” when paraphrasing, it may be beneficial to
include that detail.
2. In addition to paraphrasing with synonyms, we can also use other paraphrasing
techniques. For instance:
The bar chart illustrates how the percentage of Australian men and women
engaging in regular physical activity varied across six different age groups in 2010.
TIPS: Make sure to look at the answer key and explanation on page 236. It’s a good idea to check
the explanation from time to time to help clear up any confusion you have.
Key Takeaways:
When writing your introduction, avoid simply copying the original text and
focus on paraphrasing effectively.
Experiment with different paraphrasing methods, like using synonyms or
“how”.
Pay attention to whether the words you select for paraphrasing are a good
fit neither too narrow nor too broad.

To identify the key highlights, we will take a general look at the chart and find:
- the highest/lowest figures for each category.
- the largest/smallest gap between categories.
Again, with Diagram 3, we have:

Once I’ve identified the patterns and key highlights, I’ll bring them together to create the
first version of my overview.
Overall, the percentage of women participating in regular physical activity in
Australia was higher than that of men across most age groups, except for the 15-24 age
group. Additionally, the highest percentage for women was found in the 45-54 age group,
while the highest percentage for men was observed in the 15-24 age group.
[54 words]
After writing this, I noticed the information provided here isn’t sufficiently general to serve as an
overview. So, I revisited the question and had another realization.

Did you notice what I saw? Females (the orange line) began with a low participation rate in the 15-24
age group, then reached their peak in middle age, while males (the blue line) started with the highest
rates in the 15-24 age group but declined to their lowest levels in middle age.
So, I rewrite the overview as follows:
Although females typically had higher participation rates than males across most
age groups, their patterns were different. Female rates peaked in middle age, while males
began highest in the 15-24 age group, but saw a decline to their lowest levels in middle age.
[43 words]
TIPS: Ensure that the information you include reflects the overall trend depicted in the chart.
Key Takeaways:
Your overview should offer a clear and concise summary of the main
trend in the chart.
Aim for a well-balanced overview that can present patterns and
emphasize key highlights.
After identifying the highlights, double-check to ensure they
accurately show the chart’s overall trend.

For example, in Diagram 3, which examines six age groups, I will separate the three age groups
from 15 to 44 into body paragraph 1, and the three age groups from 45 to 65+ into body paragraph 2.
The selection of categories into a paragraph should be well-structured and should not be
random. The criteria for dividing sections should be clearly stated in the first sentence of each
body paragraph (topic sentence).
For example, when I asked my students how to structure the categories into separate paragraphs
for Diagram 3, more than five decided to place the 25 to 64 age groups in the first paragraph because
they follow a similar pattern (which makes sense). They put the “left-out” categories, the 15-24 and
the 65+ age groups, in the second paragraph simply because these were the remaining categories.
However, this approach lacks clarity, as it may be difficult for examiners to understand why the
categories were divided this way.

2. Subject-based division
If the chart involves two surveyed subjects, A and B, we will group the data related to A in paragraph
1 and the data related to B in paragraph 2. Similarly, if the chart involves three surveyed subjects, let’s
call them A, B, and C, we can organize the information into three separate body paragraphs.
With Diagram 3, we can divide the data as follows:

1. Category-based division
a. Functions of each sentence
A complete essay body usually consists of 4-5 sentences, each with different tasks and
functions. I often arrange the sentences as follows:
Sentence 1: Summarize the main information of the paragraph (referred to as a topic
sentence).
Sentence 2: Detailed description of the data for the first category.
Sentence 3: Detailed description of the data for the second category.
...
b. Outline and sample body paragraphs
To maintain organization, I typically create an outline before beginning to write. It
typically looks like this:
