Singing for Musical Theatre, Grade 3

Overall result: Distinction

Richard & Robert Sherman: Feed the Birds (from Mary Poppins) 25/30
There was a sense of connection to the text for the most part here and the phrasing was well
shaped, with varied colour in the dynamics. The tone was generally well projected, though
there were early slips in the intonation. However this settled down after a while and there
was a generally flowing feel.

Pasek & Paul: A Million Dreams (from The Greatest Showman) 25/30
There was a clear sense of shape and connection here, with a rhythmic feel and colourful
dynamics. The tone was warm, if not always quite projected or resonant, though the lowest
and highest notes weren’t always reliable in the intonation. Nevertheless there was some
character here.

Arlen & Harburg: If I Only Had a Brain (from The Wizard of Oz) 27/30
A perky and buoyant start was made here and there was some varied colour in the dynamics,
with a jazzy and swinging feel. There was an engaged feel to the individual words and the
tone was generally well projected, with scope for rather more resonance and body. On the
whole this was nicely secure and generally flowing.

Unaccompanied song 18/21

There was a shapely approach to the phrasing here, with a well maintained line and, on the
whole, a connected approach to the text. After a shaky start, the pitch was essentially
maintained, despite the odd slight intonation slip.

Sight-reading 17/21
There were quite a few pitching slips here, though there was often a pulse, with mostly
correct rhythms, even if some contrast was needed.

Aural Tests 18/18

All responses were commendably accurate and prompt.
