Mental Health of Young People in Ireland Irish National Teachers Organisation.
Based in a secondary school environment, where students are having lunch. The video forces on the
various characteristics that man would be associated with.
Video
Opening – Lunch bell rings and students go to the canteen for lunch.
Students are in different queues for characteristics being poured out. With a lot of male students going
for characteristics associated with men. There is no one in the queue for traits like emotions, or
talking about feelings.
Middle - After receiving their food, the students return to their tables to eat their lunch. Once they
have finished, several boys make their way out to the school court to play a game of football. One boy
is the main focus of the game. Another student remains in the canteen alone watching or playing a
video on his phone.

Bring it back to the classroom where the student is working with the teachers. Teacher is looking out
for the signs of mental health in this student Another student remains in the canteen
alone watching or playing a video on his phone.
Monday
00-10: School bell rings and students pack their bags.
10-30 : One student enters the canteen oh his own, while another student enters the canteen with a
group of students.
30-60 : Students line up in a queue for the canteen. Video focus on students getting food focused on
male associated characteristics.
60 - 1:20: Students are sitting at their tables eating their lunch and some make their way out to the
schoolyard for a game of football. The student who entered the canteen on his own, is still on his own
and he is now watching/playing a game on his phone.
1:20 – 1:50: seconds students are outside kicking football. Focus on one student. Go back to another
student sitting by himself.
1:50 – 2:10: School bell rings and the students return to class. The student in the canteen comes to
class alone and the other student comes to class with a group of peers.

2:10- 2:30: One student A is looking out the window not paying attention. The teacher is calling on
him to get work done. The teacher looks visibly worried about the student.
Tuesday
2:30-2.50 Repeats Monday's lunchtime routine with the two students.

Wednesday
2:50 -3:00: At lunch time detention the teacher is looking at the roll and student A is not present. He is
outside kicking football again. The teacher again looks worried about the student.
3:00- 3:05 Student B is in the canteen alone again.
3:05 -3:15: Teacher is doing research on mental health of students. Looking at the websites above.
Prints out posters on mental health with contact numbers.

Thursday
3:15 – 3:35: Thursday morning the teacher notices the student is entering the school. As the student
enters the building the teacher asks the student if he is feeling alright. The student brushes this off and
says he ok.
3:35 – 3:45: The teacher is hanging up the posters he printed out from the night before. The students
notices and takes down a number from the poster.
3:45- 3:50: The student is not playing football today.
3:50-3:55: Student B is in the canteen alone again.

Friday:
3:55 -4:05: The teacher decides to give the students a presentation of the services available to young
men’s mental health.

4:05 -4:15: That evening the students avails of the services by ring a support line.
Closure
As a teacher you can have an emphasis on every student
Go through the supports available.
