Setting: Youth club Hall. In the hall is Sinenhlanhla, Sivuyisiwe, Lihle, Ongezwa.

Sinenhlanhla: Okay everybody, sit down and switch off your phones and put them away. Looks at

Sinenhlanhla does the sign language for switch phone off.

Sivuyisiswe agrees.

Lihle does not switch his phone off but instead hides it to continue texting later.

Sinenhlanhla: Today we have a special guest from “Raining money Bank” and she has some financial

literacy information to present so please welcome. Sesethu Msizi.

Enter Sesethu

Everybody cheers.

Sesethu: Hello everyone. I am not here on my own, I have my colleague to do interpretation in sign

language.

Sinenhlanhla sits down in the back row.

Sivuyisiwe listens intently to the screen.

Lihle pulls out phone and start texting trying to hide it.

Ongezwa is attentive.

Sesethu: Your speech girl

During the speech Sinenhlanhla spots Lihle happily using his phone and angrily glares at him and

jesters him to hand over phone. She confiscates it.

Because lihle was on his phone during the first half of the speech now he is confused. He tries to

listen, but he doesn’t understand.

APPLICATION EXERCISE: COMMUNICATION PROCESS

1.1) The sender Sesethu Msizi the presenter and her colleague.

1.2) The Receiver was the 4 audience members seated in the youth hall.

1.3) Medium Face-to-face and video conference

1.4) The codes used were verbal (message delivered by Sesethu to the audience). Sesethu used
spoken words to convey her message. Non-verbal (sign language, body language) code was used
as well.

1.5) This was a presentation about financial management delivered to the youth club. Teaching them
about financial literacy. This is a topic that would resonate well with young south African.

1.6) Does Raining Money Bank provide student loans and bursaries? This is a question that is
synonymous with the context. As it is part that was not mentioned in the message. This question also
indicates that the learner understood the message.

1.7) Non-verbal feedback was when Lihle had a frown on his face. Indicating that he did not
understand the question.

1.8) A Barrier to communication was that the presenter (Sesethu) herself did not understand sign
language and had to rely on others to translate when it came to answering a question from the deaf
student.

2.Barriers to communication: Group Work Tasks


Barriers faced as a first year.

2.1) Culture Barriers: Differences that cause behavioural and personality differences like body
language, gestures, mindsets, communication, manners, and norms that may lead to
miscommunication. In ability to make friends from the same culture due it being a minority.

With covid-19 we saw Face-to-Face lessons be converted into Virtual distance learning.
