ORAL ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTORS for Teens and Adults

9-10 - Successfully accomplishes the tasks presented


- Sustains connected speech and participates in coherent discourse with little
or no hesitation to express thoughts and search for language
- Participates actively, effectively and appropriately in the tasks
- Pronunciation is easily understood, with little or no L1 interference
- Uses a wide range of accurate and appropriate linguistic resources to
express ideas.
- Attempts to use more complex language, though this may lead to some
inaccuracies.

7-8 - Achieves the task competently with little or no prompting


- Is able to sustain connected speech and participate in coherent discourse
with some hesitation to express thoughts and search for language
- Is able to participate actively and appropriately in the tasks
- Grammar and vocabulary is sufficient for effective, functional use of the
language
- Occasionally produces inaccuracies and inappropriacies
- Is able to monitor his/her own discourse , i.e. does not require major
assistance or prompting by the examiner
- Pronunciation is understood though there may some be L1 interference.

5-6 - Able to manage discourse adequately, although there are hesitations and

Depends - Able to participate in the development of the discourse although not able to
On level engage in extended interchange
- Grammar and vocabulary is adequate for simple communication but the
meaning of some utterances may not be clear.
- Although the candidate’s pronunciation is affected by L1 features, he/she

- Shows some evidence of repair strategies when prompted by the examiner.
- If necessary, the candidate can ask for assistance in L2.
