It is easy to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words if the clues or hints are given. In this
learning activity, you will learn the ways on how to get the meaning of unfamiliar words with the
use of context clues.

TASK I: Let Us Review

Direction: Find the synonym of the following words. Encircle the letter of your choice.

TASK 2: Let Us Study

Context clues are hints which are needed to get the meaning of new or unfamiliar words. These
clues are found in the sentence, statement and paragraph

Example:

1. Please handle the glass jar with care, its fragile, thus easily broken.

Explanation; The word fragile means easily broken. Therefore, fragile and easily broken are
the same.

2. Miss Alegre is a spinster. She remained unmarried.

The second example shows that the meaning of spinster is being single or unmarried.

Direction: Read and study the sentences carefully. Encircle the context clues found in the
sentence to get the meaning of the underlined word.

the sentence or paragraph in order to get the meaning of unfamiliar words.

Direction: Give the meaning of the underlined word by looking at the appropriate context clues
in the sentence. Place the word/ phrase inside the box.
