Composing Clear and Coherent Sentences
Using Subject – Verb Agreement

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

As a Grade V learner, it is expected that you can already compose simple sentences. In this learning
activity sheet, you are going to learn how to compose clear and coherent sentences using subject and
verb agreement.

II. LEARNING COMPETENCY

Compose clear and coherent sentences using appropriate grammatical structure: subject- verb
agreement (EN5G-IIa3.9)

III. ACTIVITIES

TASK I: Let Us Review

A sentence is a group of words expressing a complete thought. It is composed of subject and verb. The
subject is the one being talk about in the sentence and the verb or action word talks about the subject.

Example:

1. The teacher records the learners’ scores.


2. My best friend plays basketball.
3. Aling Corazon sells puto and suman.
4. The doctor treats the patients.
5. Ernesto scrubs the floor.

The sentences above are example of clear and coherent sentence using subject -verb agreement.
TASK 2: Let Us Study the following sentences

Note: The subject must agree with the verb and vice -versa.

If you are very observant, you will notice that the subject in column A is singular, meaning one. The verb
used is the so called the s form. In set B, the subject is plural and the verb used is the base form.

TASK 3: Let Us Practice

Read the sentences and underline the correct answer. Take note of the subject- verb agreement
1. The (boy, boys) play Mobile Legends.
2. Some (farmer, farmers) sell all their produce.
3. The naughty (dog, dogs) chases the cat.
4. The tv (reporter, reporters) gather fresh news.
5. (Driver, Drivers) bring the passengers to their destination.

To make the sentence correct, the subject and verb must agree with each other.

In composing a clear and coherent sentence, we should always take into consideration the agreement
between subject and verb.
