भारतीय भवू ैज्ञानिक सवेक्षण आजादी के 75 साल परू े होिे के उपलक्ष्य में आजादी का अमृत महोत्सव के एक भाग के रूप में परू े भारत के
नवनभन्ि भ-ू नवरासत स्थलों पर एक नदवसीय काययक्रम का आयोजि कर रहा है, तानक जिता और छात्रों के बीच भू-नवरासत स्थल के महत्व के बारे में
जागरूकता लाई जा सके । भाभसू राज्य इकाई: तनमलिाडु और पडु ु चेरी िे 29.1.24 को मरीि िेशिल पाकय , मन्िार की खाडी, धिषु कोडी, रामिाथपरु म
नजले मेंहमारी भावी पीऩियों को नदखािे के नलए उन्हें संरनक्षत करिे का महत्व बतािे हेतु एक नदवसीय काययक्रम का आयोजि नकया। अलगप्पा
नवश्वनवद्यालय, कराईकुडी से स्िातक स्तर की प़िाई कर रहे कुल 21 छात्रों िे इस काययक्रम में उत्साहपवू यक भाग नलया।

मथु ानमल सेलविराज्य इकाई: तनमलिाडु और पडु ु चेरी, चेन्िई, िेरामिाथपरु म, धिुषकोडी और कोरल द्वीप, एरवाडीमें नलग्िाइट फील्ड कैं प की यात्रा की
व्यवस्था करते हुए इस काययक्रम का भव्य तरीके से आयोजि नकया।

अकाअम की िोडल अनधकारी श्रीमती सी. सुनस्मथा, वररष्ठ भनू वज्ञािी िे अपिे स्वागत भाषण के साथ नलग्िाइट फील्ड कैं प, रामिाथपरु म में
काययक्रम का उद्घाटि नकया। उन्होंिे श्री बी. अजय कुमार, उपमहानिदेशक एवं श्री सी.के . राजा, निदेशक एवं कायायलय प्रमख
ु ,राज्य इकाई: तनमलिाडु
एवं पडु ु चेरी, चेन्िई और अलगप्पा नवश्वनवद्यालय, कराईकुडी के छात्रों का इस अवसर की शोभा ब़िािे के नलए का हानदयक स्वागत नकया । उन्होंिे
भारत के नवनभन्ि भ-ू नवरासत स्थलों के बारे में जागरूकता पैदा करिे के महत्व को भी समझाया और तनमलिाडु के सात भ-ू नवरासत स्थलों के महत्व पर
प्रकाश डाला। श्री बी. अजय कुमार, उपमहानिदेशक िे अपिे उद्घाटि भाषण के दौराि भाभसू , चेन्िई के नवशेष सदं भय में भारत की एके एएम गनतनवनधयों
के बारे में बताया। उन्होंिे छात्रों को बताया नक नकसी भ-ू नवरासत स्थल की पहचाि कै से की जाती है और उन्हें संरनक्षत करिा क्यों महत्वपणू य है। उन्होंिे
छात्रों को कडी मेहित और लगि के महत्व के बारे में बताया। श्री. सी.के . राजा, निदेशक िे छात्रों को कोरल और नवनशष्ट वातावरण में इसके नवकास के
बारे में बताया। उन्होंिे मंगू ा नवकास सनहत समद्रु तट की भू-आकृ नतयों और सापेक्ष समद्रु ी स्तर पररवतयि के साथ इसके संबंध पर भी प्रकाश डाला था।
श्री के मथु ानमल सेलवि, भनू वज्ञािी िे तनमलिाडु के कावेरी बेनसि, नलग्िाइट क्षेत्रों के उप-बेनसिों पर एक संनक्षप्त िोट देते हुए छात्रों को रामिाथपरु म में
नकए जा रहे नलग्िाइट जाचं कायय के बारे में बताया। छात्रों को निनलगं साइट (आरआरईएल-2) पर ले जाया गया, जहां नलग्िाइट जाचं पररयोजिा के
निष्पादि में बोरहोल निल नकए जा रहे थे और नलथो और फॉमेशिल संपकों, नलग्िाइट सीम और इसकी ज्यानमनत सनहत क्षेत्र के स्रैनटग्रानफक अिक्र
ु म
को मख्ु य िमिू ों के साथ समझाया गया था। भाभसू अनधकाररयों िे छात्रों के प्रश्नों का उत्तर नदया और सत्र को और अनधक बहुपक्षीय बिा नदया।

उद्घाटि सत्र के बाद, छात्रों को कोरल द्वीप, इरवाडी ले जाया गया जहां समद्रु ी राष्रीय उद्याि के नलए ब्रोशर आनधकाररक तौर पर जारी नकया
गया था। छात्रों को क्षेत्र में मौजदू नवनभन्ि प्रकार के मंगू ों, उिके नवकास पैटिय और तटीय जैव नवनवधता में उिके प्रभाव को नदखािे के नलए स्पष्ट तल
वाली िावों में ले जाया गया। इस द्वीप को अन्य 20 द्वीपों के साथ, जो मन्िार की खाडी में तूतीकोररि से धिुषकोडी तक के निकटवती क्षेत्र में नस्थत हैं,
उस क्षेत्र में प्रचनलत अनद्वतीय पाररनस्थनतकी तंत्र की रक्षा के नलए बायोस्फीयर ररजवय घोनषत नकया गया है। छात्रों को तटरे खा में मौजदू मृत मंगू ों को
नदखाया और समझाया गया।

दोपहर के सत्र में, छात्रों को तटीय भू-आकृ नत नवज्ञाि नदखािे और समद्रु तटों में रे त के टीलों के नवकास की प्रनक्रया समझािे के नलए
धिषु कोडी गांव ले जाया गया। श्री जी.सतीश अधीक्षण भनू वज्ञािी िे रे त के टीलों और अन्य समद्रु तटीय भ-ू आकृ नतयों के निमायण के पीछे के भनू वज्ञाि को
समझाया। उन्होंिे अपतटीय खनिज संसाधिों को ब़िािे के नलए शरू
ु नकए गए तटीय प्रनक्रयाओ ं और समद्रु ी खनिज संसाधि अन्वेषण काययक्रमों का
अध्ययि करिे के नलए समद्रु तट प्रोफाइनलंग में भाभसू के समद्रु ी और तटीय सवेक्षण प्रभाग के प्रमख
ु योगदाि के बारे में भी बताया। भनू वज्ञािीश्री के .
मथु ानमल सेलवि िे उस क्षेत्र की भ-ू आकृ नत नवज्ञाि के बारे में भी बताया जहां एडम नब्रज उसके भवू ैज्ञानिक महत्व के साथ मौजदू है। काययक्रम का
समापि श्री सी.के .राजा, निदेशक एवं कायायलय प्रमख
ु द्वारा प्रस्तानवत धन्यवाद प्रस्ताव के साथहुआ।

A note on AzadikaAmrutMahotsav celebration at Marine National Park, Gulf of Mannar,

Dhanushkodi heritage site on 29.1.24
Geological Survey of India is conducting a day-long event at various geo-heritage sites around India as a part
of AzadiKaAmrutMahotsav in commemoration of 75 years of Independence to bring awareness among the public and
students on the significance of the Geoheritage site and the importance in preserving and conserving them for
showcasing to our future generations. State unit: Tamil Nadu and Puducherry of GSI conducted such a day-long event at
at Marine National Park, Gulf of Mannar, Dhanushkodi, Ramnathapuram district on 29.1.24. A total of 21 students
pursuing geology in graduation from Alagappa University, Karaikudi participated in this event enthusiastically.

Under the leadership and guidanceof Shri. B. Ajaya Kumar, DDG, SU: TNP, Chennai, Shri. C.K. Raja,
Director & Head of Office, Shri. G. Sathish, Superintending geologist, Smt. C. Susmitha, Senior Geologist & Nodal
officer AKAM and Shri. K, MuthamilSelvan, Geologist of SU: TNP, Chennai conducted this event in a grand way
arranging a visit to Lignite Field Camp. Ramanathapuram, Dhanushkodi and Coral Island, Erwadi.

The nodal officer of AKAM, Smt. C. Susmitha, Senior Geologistunfurled the event at Lignite field camp,
Ramanathapuram with her welcome speech. She extended warm welcome toShri. B. Ajaya Kumar, DDG, SU: TNP,
Chennai and Shri. C.K. Raja, Director & Head of Office, SU: TNP, Chennai and students from Alagappa University,
Karaikudi for gracing this occasion. She also explained the importance of creating awareness about various geo heritage
sites of India and highlighted the significance of seven geoheritage sites of Tamil Nadu. Shri. B. Ajaya Kumar, DDG
during his inaugural address, he explained the AKAM activities of India with special reference to GSI, Chennai. He
explained the students about how a geoheritage site is identified and why it is important to preserve them. He informed
the students about the importance of hard work and perseverance. Shri. C.K. Raja, Director explained the students about
the corals and its growth in specific environment. He also had thrown light on beach landforms including coral
developments and its relation with relative sea level change. Shri. K, MuthamilSelvan, Geologist explained the Lignite
investigation work being carried out in Ramanathapuram to the students giving a brief note on sub-basins of Cauvery
Basin, Lignite Fields of Tamil Nadu. The students were taken to the drilling site (RREL-2) where boreholes are being
drilled in execution of a Lignite investigation project and the stratigraphic sequence of the area including the Litho and
formational contacts, Lignite seams and its geometry were explained with core samples. GSI officers replied to the
queries of students and made the session more interactive.

After the inaugural session, students were taken to the coral Island, Erwadi where the brochure for marine
national park was officially released. The students were taken in clear-bottom boats to show the various types of corals
present in the area, their growth pattern and their influence in coastal biodiversity. This island along with other 20 islands
which lie in the nearshore domain from Tuticorin to Dhanushkodi in the Gulf of Mannarhas been declared as the
biosphere reserve in order to protect the unique ecosystem prevalent in that area.The dead corals present in the shoreline
were shown and explained to the students.

In the afternoon session, the students were taken to Dhanushkodi village to show them the coastal
geomorphology and explain the process of development of sand dunes in the beaches. Shri. G. Sathish, Superintending
Geologist explained the geology behind the formation of sand dunesand other beach landforms.He also explained the
major contribution of Marine and Coastal Survey Division of GSI in beach profiling to study coastal processes and
marine mineral resource exploration programs launched to augment offshore mineral resources. Shri. K.
MuthamilSelvan, Geologist also explained the geomorphology of the area where Adam’s bridge is present with its
geological significance. The event ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Shri. C.K.Raja, Director & Head of office.
