Unit 4 Real lives

Clarification

Follow the instructions and pay special attention to the vocabulary connected to “personal qualities” on
page 42, activity 1 of this unit.

Activity sequence

1. Initial stage reflection time: answer these questions as honestly as possible. Edit your answers
in and use a different font colour if necessary.

- Have you ever tried to pick up a new hobby, skill, ability or pastime? If yes, what was/is it?
Yes, when I was like 10 years I joined into a soccer team

- Was it a personal initiative or were you motivated by someone else to get into it?
A personal initiative because I was always interested in soccer
- Have you ever felt stressed and or frustrated in your learning process? Why?
Yes, after a few years I had a problem with the coach and the situation became stressful and
frustrating
- Do you think we should have personal initiative when pursuing a life ambition or is it okay if
someone else gives us that motivation to keep going even if we don’t like the idea?
It’s okay if someone else gives us the motivation, in my case I started for my own but my
parents give me extra motivation

Reading and writing:

Pre-task: reflect and answer with your own ideas

a. Is it common in your family or friends’ families to have ambitions/expectations or plans for

their kids?
Probably yes, expectations with the grades at school and become a professional

b. To what point is it healthy for parents to be invested into their kids’ life plans and education?

Just in instilling being a good person and finding interested of their kids
- Before you read, answer the questions:

- In your opinion, what is the role of parents in their children’s lives?

Teach good values and give them a dignified life

- Is it okay for parents to impose their will and preference on their children when it comes to life
goals?

No, the children have to decide for themselves and do what they like

- Has anyone ever tried to convince you to choose a life goal or profession? If yes, why do you
think this happens in some families?

It could be said yes, but justified. When I decided to change my career, they try to convince me
to continue but because of the number of semesters taken, finally they understood my decision
and supported me.

Read the text “Andre Agassi” and “Pushed too far” and answer these questions:

a. How does the young Andre feel about tennis and his father?

b. What is “the dragon” and what type of emotional-mental impact or link do you think it created
on Andre?

c. Do you think Andre´s father was right to push his children in the way he did?

Parallels – video analysis and contrast

2. Double click the “intro video – Peter Griffin violin” and watch it, then answer the 2 questions:

- P1: How are Peter’s and Andre’s stories similar or different?

- P2: Both P and A managed to “go pro” with their skills but what, in your opinion, is the cost
each one of them paid as seen in the text and the reaction by the end of the clip?

3. In point 8a of the book, page 39, there is a list of statements about the topic. Pick one you agree
or disagree with and explain your reasons.

Life events
4. Go to page 40 of the book. Have a look at Meltem’s lifetime and listen to unit 4 recording 4
(double click the icon below) to get some information about the significant events in Mel’s life.
Do language focus 2 task – complete the gaps as you listen.

For Monday: For this task, you can use Canva or Pptx to design your
product:

Create your own personal lifetime chart adding significant highlights of your life (remember, it’s
yours, if you think flying a kite when you were 5 years old is important, you are totally allowed

to add it as a point in your timeline 😊). Think about the things that feel/felt important, significant or
relevant when creating your timeline.
- Paste a screenshot of your lifetime in this document or upload it as a separate PDF when
requested. Add images, icons or pictures to make it more personal (no need to use real pictures,
you will always be allowed to use reference pics from the internet).
