Communication Accommodation Theory: How might accommodation backfire on an

individual? Discuss some scenarios.

There are two ways the usage of this theory can backfire. Since a person can
decide whether he or she will conform to his or her partner in the communication
process or not. People inertly have different attitudes towards communication, just as
they also have different reactions and perspectives on how to communicate. This could
be based on the other person’s value to his or her counterpart and vice versa. Hence, if
you are speaking to someone you like, then you are most likely to conform to their way
of speaking. However, you could be bad at mimicking that person and he or she could
interpret it in a negative way and it will affect the communication process, as well as
your relationship with that person. On the other hand, you could exert your dominance
in a conversation and speak in the manner that you are used to and people could be
intimidating by how you present yourself. This could lead them to view you as less
hospitable, and even possibly arrogant and standoffish. This could also lead to a bad
communication and relationship with your communicating partner.
