Lesson 7. Levels of Biological Organization

The Levels of Biological Organization

“Life is complex, yet it is organized”.

Biological Organization refers to the system of classification that arranges the levels of life in a hierarchical
order. In this system, each level is more complex than the level that precedes.
The different levels of the biological organization are as follows:
 Cell
 Tissue
 Organ
 Organ system
 Organism
 Population
 Community
 Ecosystem
 Biosphere
The Cell
 The smallest unit of the biological organization, with all living things having this basic functional
structure.
 It is capable of numerous metabolic activities like transforming energy into different forms and
controlling the transmission of hereditary traits.
 A cell is surrounded by a plasma membrane that delineates the cell’s interior from its exterior.
 This membrane serves to regulate the substances that enter and leave the cell.

 Most cells have a nucleus, or the part that contains genetic material in the form of deoxyribonucleic
acid (DNA).

A Tissue
 A group of distinct and similar cells that carry out a specific set of functions.
Humans and animals have four types of tissues:
o Epithelial
o Connective
o Muscle
o Nerve
 Epithelial tissue, also called epithelium, is made up of cells that form the covering or lining of all
body surfaces, such as the outer layer of the skin.
 It protects the body from dust, dirt, bacteria and other similar organisms that may harm the body.

 Connective tissue is made up of cells and fibers that are always embedded in an intercellular
matrix.
 The most diverse of all animal tissues, as the kind of matrix distinguishes the kind of connective
tissue.
 Connective tissue include blood, lymph, connective tissue proper, cartilage, and bone.

 Blood and lymph transport nutrients, gases, hormones and other chemicals throughout the body,
while connective tissue proper, cartilage, and bone provide support and movement.
 Muscle tissue is used by the body to contract its skeletal parts.

 Nervous tissue enables the body to react to stimuli and conducts nerve impulses to various parts of
the body.

Organ
 Made up of two or more types of tissues that are grouped together to perform a specific task.
 The human heart is an organ that is made up of the four different parts of the body.

Organ System
 Made up of two or more organs that work together as a single unit to perform a broad set of
functions, particularly in many-celled organisms.
 The digestive system is an example of an organ system. In this system, the mouth, esophagus,
stomach, pancreas, gallbladder, liver and small and large intestines work together to process food
that the body needs.

Organism
 An individual, either single-celled or many-celled, which represents the complete framework of
organ systems, organs and all other components that carry out the processes of a living thing.
 Unicellular organisms have only one cell but they can function and perform independently.
 They can either be a eukaryote or a prokaryote.

Population
 Made up of group of organisms of the same species that are capable of interbreeding and that live
in a specific area.

Community
 Made up of all the different populations of different species that interact and coexist in a specific
area.

Ecosystem
 Made up of the living things in populations and the nonliving things that they interact or work with in
their environment or surroundings.
 Ecosystem may be as big as a plain, a forest, or a mud puddle.

Biosphere
 Part of the Earth and its atmosphere that contains all ecosystems and on which living organisms
exist.
 The biosphere can range from the atmosphere to the ocean depths and from a very cold
environment to a very hot environment.

 Living things can be found in the atmosphere, the deepest parts of the ocean, and in some areas,
in rocks several kilometers below the surface of Earth.

2. Give a short summary about the levels of biological organization.

3. Why does the levels of biological organization needed to be in a hierarchical order.
