visit Boracay whilst you are there.”
What is the transition word here?
The transition word that was used is
obviously ma’am.
Next let’s go to repeat. If we say
repeat class, we say it again, right?
(The students nod their heads.)
What are the examples of repeat?
Ma’am the examples are, as I have said, a
while ago and as has been noted?
Now use the phrase as I have said in a
sentence.

(A student raises her hand.)

Yes dear. Go on.
Mom as I have said I am in love with a
criminal.
Wow! Is that a lyric of a song? Right?

What about as has been noted?

As has been noted this is a bit of a mess at
this point.
Brilliant Grade 8!

In addition to that, we also have here

reformulation. From the root word
what?
Form ma’am.
Yes, that’s it, from the root word form

6
and the prefix re, re means repeat it
again.

And what are the transition words that

we can use to express reformulation? (The students read the following.)

example just look at your handout.

Look at this sentence, where is the

transition word here?

E.g., She said the movie was a bit

predictable. In other words, she didn't
like it.
Ma’am in this sentence the transition
word in the sentence is in other words.
Very good! In other word is also an
example of reformulation.

Now let’s go to importance.

If we say importance what does that

mean? We have here examples for
importance. What are they? The state or fact of being of great
significance or value ma’am.
(The students read the following
examples.)
With attention to
Above all
Chiefly
Especially
Most importantly
Again, take a look at this sentence.
They use the word chiefly as a
transition. E.g., He phoned chiefly to let us know he
was feeling better.
We also have here transition that
shows enumeration. Now grade 8 if
we enumerate something what do we
actually do? Ma’am if we enumerate something we
mentioned them one by one.
That’s it, so if you want to enumerate
something, here are the words you can
use for you to avoid abruptly jumping
from next to another.

We have here an example, please read.

(The students read the following.)

7
Firstly, finally, next, then, on top of that,
and to begin with.
Next let’s go to Concession. If we say
concession, what does it mean grade
8? Ma’am concession is used to acknowledge
an opposing view and might be used in
the form of the following words and
phrases: granted that, I admit that,
concealing that, of course, even so, and
yet, nonetheless and no doubt
Thank you, do you also use these
words when you make a sentence? Ma’am no we don’t.

Oh, I see later on you will be

challenge to do so. Now read the E.g., Granted, he did fail that one test, but
example. I think there were good reasons for that.

So, in that sentence what is the

transition word? Granted ma’am.

True.

Last but not the least, types of

transition that we will learn is
summary or conclusion. Here is the
list of words again that you can use
when you want to summarize or
conclude. Kindly read it everybody. (The students read the following.)
Overall, in conclusion, in short, to
summarize, in conclusion, in brief, and
altogether.
We have here a sentence, they used
the word overall as a transition. E.g., Overall, the tone of the book is
satirical.
The last one that we will tackle is
result. So, what is result Grade 8?

Very good!

So, what are the examples of transition

that shows result that you have in
mind? Ma’am a result is a consequence, effect,
or outcome of something.
Then how about you use due to in a
sentence.
(A student volunteers.)
Sure, go ahead. The traffic jam was due to a terrible
accident at the intersection.

Wow! Good job Grade 8. Thank you

for your active participation.

8
That concludes our lesson for today.
Any violent reaction, clarification. Is it
clear to you?
None ma’am.
Okay then. Let’s wrap up. If you don’t
have a question, I have a question.

D. GENERALIZATION
Now that you learn more about
transition words and phrases. What do
you think is the purpose of transition?
The purpose of transition ma’am is to
connect our ideas to make a sense.
What do you think will happen if we
don’t use them when we
communicate?
If we don’t use transitions in
communicating people will have
True, that’s why transition is very connotation about us.
important not just in literature but also
in our everyday life.

Just observe this paragraph and

imagine that you are the one saying it.

(All of the students silently read the

Yesterday I went walking. I paragraph.)
don’t walk in the mornings. The sun
was shining and I felt like some
exercise. I saw lots of different
animals such as birds, squirrels,
butterflies, and rabbits. I decided to
walk further than usual to see how
many more I could spot. I reach the
pathway which would take me home. I
was enjoying myself so much I
decided to carry on. The weather was
still warm, the clouds beginning to
gather. I was quite far from home
when the rain came down. It was only
a gentle shower, but it soon started
falling more heavily. By the time I got
home I was wet through and quite
cold.

If you are telling that to your friend

and someone overheard it. He will
probably and bound to judge you.
Therefore, you better make yourself
clear and make your writings
coherent. Remember also that words
with similar meanings don’t

9
necessarily work the same way
grammatically. So, you can’t just
replace the word chiefly to above all
even if they have the same meaning
because if we talk about grammar, it
does not work like that. It depends
upon the context of the sentence.
