the Classroom
Steven Knepper
Objectives
● To inform educators on how to effectively use AI in the

classroom

● To empower educators to adopt AI in their daily work with

students

● By the end of this presentation, you will be much more confident

and comfortable using AI with students

Connection to Leadership Standards
Teacher Leader Model Standard: Domain II: Accessing and Using Research to
Improve Practice and Student Learning
● Continued research of AI in the classroom and how it can support student learning and instructional
practices
● Determine new instructional strategies and policies to inform my fellow educators and administrators
● Targeted recommendations and actions that can be used to shape classroom policies and staff and
student interaction with AI

Teacher Leader Model Standard: Domain IV: Facilitating Improvements in Instruction

and Student Learning
● Determining how AI can be used by my colleagues to improve instruction and student learning
● Uncover how individual student learning can be enhanced and more equitable through
recommendations, guidance, and policies
● Better grasp and comfortability not only with using AI, but with allowing their students to gain equitable
access to this instructional tool
What is AI?
● Artificial Intelligence is technological intelligence that mimics human
intellectual processes such as problem-solving, judgment, and data
processing
● Many forms:
○ Chat Bots/Image Generators (Chat GPT / Google Bard / Microsoft
Edge)
○ Content Creation (Jasper)
○ Editors (Grammarly)
○ Others (Video, Music, Transcription, Tasks, Scheduling,
Communication, etc)
● It is here to ENHANCE not replace effective teaching
AI Research Team Tasks

● Meet monthly with curriculum designers, administrators, and

teachers
● Review literature
● Provide examples of student and teacher use
● Present preliminary information
● Draft policies and practices
● Provide insights to local districts and stakeholders
● Book club
Top Findings from AI Research Team

● Teacher attitudes matter

● Policies should focus on usefulness, practical applications, ethical
use, and safety
● Connections between curriculum, skills, and AI (mathematical
thinking)
● Helps develop 21st-century skills

Common Problem

Problem:
● Students using AI unethically to cheat and plagiarize

Solution:
● Help students learn how to use AI ethically, effectively, and efficiently
● Students will have to use this tool in whatever career they choose, so
being upfront and honest with students is best
Ethical Use Considerations
● As educators, we must be careful when implementing any new
technology
● Plagiarism: Students have used Chat GPT/other AI tools to plagiarize
● Plagiarism Checkers
● Conversations with students matter
● Focus on teaching moments, not punitive measures
● Need to inform parents
● Need to show formal writing process / show work
Policy Recommendations

● Tiered system of discipline

● Treat as plagiarism
● Use teaching moments, not punitive measures
● Use warnings of how higher education, employers, military, etc. will
not allow for this type of plagiarism
● Compliance/Consistency: Student adherence to existing policies
Proper Uses

● Help with research and brainstorming

● Feedback
● Personalize Learning
● Streamline information
● Condense ideas
● Fill in knowledge gaps
Improper Uses

● Using AI to do your work

● Using AI to cheat
● Using AI to bully or harass others
● Ignoring safety concerns
