Crochet hook size 7 (4.5 mm)
Fiberfill stuffing
One pair black safety eyes, 10mm diameter
Black and white embroidery floss

GAUGE
10 sc + 10 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm).
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

STITCH EXPLANATION
sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all
3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

TECHNIQUE EXPLANATIONS
Magic Ring Wrap yarn around index finger. Insert hook into ring on finger, yarn over and draw up a loop.
Carefully slip ring from finger and work the sts of Rnd 1 into the ring.
Invisible Join After working last st of rnd, drop loop from hook. Insert hook from WS to RS in first st of rnd
and pull up a loop. Ch 1. From RS, continue with next instruction.

NOTES
1. Hammerhead Shark is worked in 6 pieces: Head-Body, Dorsal Fin, 2 Pectoral Fins, and 2 Caudal Fins.
2. All pieces are worked in joined rnds. Join last st of each rnd to first st with an invisible join (see Technique
Explanations).
3. The center section of Head is worked back and forth in rows to form an opening. Sts are worked around
the opening to begin the neck and body.

HEAD-BODY

Head
Make a magic ring.
Rnd 1 (RS): Work 6 sc in ring; invisible join.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around; invisible join – you will have 12 sc in this rnd..
Rnd 3: Ch 1, * sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around; invisible join – 18 sc.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in each st around; invisible join.
Rnds 5-7: Ch 1, sc in each st around; invisible join.

Form Opening
Rows 8-13: Ch 1, sc in each st around; do NOT join; TURN.
Rnds 14-18: Ch 1, sc in each st around; invisible join.
Rnd 19: Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in each st around; invisible join.
Rnd 20: Ch 1, * sc in next st, sc2tog; rep from * around; invisible join – 12 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through top of sts of last rnd. Pull tail to close opening and
knot securely.
Following package instructions, insert plastic safety eyes on sides of Head between Rnds 1 and 2.
Begin stuffing piece and continue stuffing until piece is complete.

Body
From RS, working around edge of neck opening, pull up a loop in the end of Row 8, so that you are ready to
work in ends of rows along one long edge of opening.
Rnd 21: Ch 1, sc in end of same row and in ends of next 5 rows, work 2 sc evenly spaced along short edge
of opening; sc in end of each of 6 rows along next long edge of opening, work 2 sc evenly spaced along next
short edge of opening; invisible join – 16 sc.
Rnd 22: Ch 1, * sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around; invisible join – 20 sc.
Rnd 23: Ch 1, * sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around; invisible join – 24 sc.
Rnd 24: Ch 1, * sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around; invisible join – 28 sc.
Rnd 25: Ch 1, sc in each st around; invisible join.

Finish stuffing piece.
Rnds 53 and 54: Ch 1, sc in each st around; invisible join.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through top of sts of last rnd. Pull tail to close opening and
knot securely.

DORSAL FIN
Make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: Work 4 sc in ring; invisible join.
Rnds 2-5: Ch 1, sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st; invisible join – 8 sc in Rnd 5.
Rnds 6 and 7: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st; invisible join – 12 sc in Rnd 7.
Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in next 5 sts; invisible join – 14 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

PECTORAL FINS (make 2)


Make a magic ring.
Rnds 1-8: Work same as Rnds 1-8 of Dorsal Fin – 14 sc in Rnd 8.
Rnd 9: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st; invisible join – 16 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

LOWER CAUDAL FIN


Make a magic ring.
Rnds 1-6: Work same as Rnds 1-6 of Dorsal Fin – 10 sc in Rnd 6.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

UPPER CAUDAL FIN


Make a magic ring.
Rnds 1-7: Work same as Rnds 1-7 of Dorsal Fin – 12 sc in Rnd 7.
Rnd 8: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 3 sts, (sc2tog) twice, sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; invisible join.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

FINISHING
Using photograph as a guide and yarn tails still attached to pieces whenever possible, assemble Hammerhead
Shark as follows:
With white floss, embroider curves along outer edges of safety eyes for whites of eyes.
With black floss, embroider curves along upper edges of safety eyes and a straight st mouth.
Sew Dorsal Fin to Body between Rnds 29 and 36.
Sew Pectoral Fins to sides of Body between Rnds 28 and 37.
Sew Upper and Lower Caudal Fins to end of Tail.

Weave in ends.
