1 Introduction

1.1 General Arrangment

Dimension
Depth of Top Slab = 275 mm
Thickness of Side Wall = 250 mm
Thickness of Inner Wall = 200 mm
Depth of Bottom Slab = 300 mm

1.2 Safe Bearing Capacity

Safe bearing capacity of soil at founding level as per soil report has been taken as 396.92556 KN/m2

1.3 Design Philosphy

One metre width of the box has been adopted for grillage analysis using line elements in STAAD-Pro
software. Dead Load, SIDL, Earth Pressure and Live Load Surcharge has been applied in the STAAD.In
addition to this range of effective bridge temperature is computed. Contraction and expansion effect due
to rise and fall of temperature gradient has been applied in the STAAD model. Bottom slab of Box culvert
is idealised to rest on spring for which modulous of subgrade reaction k i , has been computed as per Ref.
Joseph E. Bowels, Ch. 9 Special Footings and Beams on Elastic Foundation and applied at nodes of staad
model.

1.4 Materials Specification and Clear cover

Concrete Steel
Grade of concrte: M 35 HYSD bars of Grade : Fe-550 D

Clear Cover
The clear cover is taken as 45 mm for Top slab and for Bottom slab 45 mm for Side wall as per Table 14.1
of IRC:112-2020

1.5 Loads and Forces

Dead Load
Dead Load has been computed using STAAD-Pro using Density of Concrete as 25 KN/m3 .The weight is
further increased by 5% to account for unforseen loads.

Super Imposed Dead Load

The superimposed load consists of weight of wearing coat, carsh barrier and railing
Weight for wearing coat = 1.10 KN/m
Weight of crash Barrier = 5.00 KN/m
Live Load with Impact
● One Lane of Class 70 R
● One Lane of Class A

The dispersion of live load is calculated using effective slab width method as per Annexure B-3 of IRC 112-
2020.

Wind Load
Wind load is estimated according to IRC-6:2017. Since, the proposed structure is for At grade road, the
effect of wind load is negligible and neglected

Seismic load
As per Cl 219.1.1 of IRC:6-2017 culverts and minor bridges upto 10m span need not to be checked for
seismic effects.

Earth Pressure and Live Load surcharge

Earth Pressure is taken according to Columb's theory and Live Load surcharge as per Cl 214.1.1.3 of IRC:6-
2017
1.6 Load Combination

● Accidental Combination ● Rare Combination
1.7 Design Check
● Check for base pressure for SLS case
● Check for crack width for SLS case
● Check for structural strength for ULS case

Note:- For +ve temperature case top slab will be Hotter than bottom, as shown in fig., for side wall
Inner side temperature is kept same as that of bottom of top slb, and as earth is persent behind
the walls, hence outer side of wall will be cooler than the inner side of wall. Temperature
difference of side wall is assumed as half of the temperature of the top slab. For bottom slab no
temperature difference is considered as it is embedded in earth. the same philosophy is
adopted for -ve temperature difference.

For overall Box Temperature elongation/Contraction is considered only for the Top
Slab, on the Conservative side
Value to be used for Expansion/Contraction (+ve/-ve = 29.3 o

βh= 1.5[1+(0.012RH)^18]h˳+250 ≤ 1500 for fcm ≤ 45 Mpa
βh= 1.5[1+(0.012RH)^18]h˳+250α3 ≤ 1500α3 for fcm > 45 Mpa
α1/2/3 are coefficient to consider the influence of the concrete strength :

α1= 43.75 0.7 α2= 43.75 0.2 α3= 43.75 0.5
