3 DESIGN CRITERIA
The design of the Substructure and Foundation is done for the Following Limit States:
1. Serviceability Limit State:
The Substructure and Foundation is checked for the Maximum Stresses in SLS Rare and SLS Frequent Combinations.
2. Ulitmate Limit State:
The Substructure and Foundation is Checked for ULS Flexure and Shear for ULS Combinations.
3. Geotechnical Design:
The Geotechnical Design of the Pile Foundation shall Comply with

1. Ultimate Limit States


The Following Limit States are checked:
ULS Flexure
The ULS Flexure Checks are done as per the recommendations of IRC 112.
The Piers and Piles have co existant Axial Force and Bending Moments and, thus, the same ULS Flexure check shall be done using
PM Interaction Diagram.
ULS Shear
The ULS Shear Checks are done as per the recommendations of IRC 112.

2. Serviceability Limit States


The following Serviceability Limit States are checked:
SLS Rare
The SLS Rare Combinations shall be used to check the Maximum Compression Stress in the Concrete and the Maximum
Tension Stress in the Reinforcement.
SLS Quasi Permanent
The SLS Quasi Combinations shall be used to check the Maximum Compression Stress in the Concrete and the Maximum
Tension Stress in the Reinforcement.
This combination shall also be used to check the Maximum Crack Width in the Members.
Maximum Crack Width is Limited to 0.3 mm

3. Geotechjnical Design
The Geotechnical Design viz. checking of Maximum Pile Reactions in Normal, Wind and Seismic cases shall be done as per
the Load Combinations given in IRC 78.

1 INTRODUCTION
The Bridge is across river Alaknanda and has a central span of 100 m. The bridge is constructed using balanced cantilever
approach.

7 LOADS APPLIED
7.1 DEAD LOADS
The Dead Load of the Structure is obtained from the analysis model by modeling the accurate geometry of the structure.
Soil Back Filling Weight on Foundation

7.2 SIDL
Crash Barrier Load is applied as .9 t/m on either edge.
Wearing Course Load is applied as 200 kg per sq m.
7.3 LIVE LOADS
The number of design lanes on the bridge is based on the clear width available between the crash barriers on
the either side. The footpath and cycle track are also considered as carriageway for live loads.

Minimum Clear Width between the Crash Barriers is taken for the determination of the number of the lanes.
Width available = 10.0 m
The following live load configurations are considered as per Table 6A of IRC 6 for 3 Lane Bridges
1. 3 Lanes of Class A
2. 1 Lane of Class 70R + 1 Lane of Class A

SV Loading is also considered for design.

CALCULATION OF BRAKING FORCES


The braking forces are calculated for Class 70R and Class A. The braking forces are computed for the worst combination
and are conservatively applied to all load cases except load cases with SV Loading.

CALCULATION OF CENTRIFUGAL FORCE


The centrifugal forces are computed for Class A and 70R as well as SV Loading.
The speed adopted for SV Loading is 5 kmph as per cl. 204.5.4 of IRC 6.
The centrifugal forces are computed for the maximum number of vehicles that can ply on one module.
The minimum plan radius of curvature is used for the computation of the centrifugal forces.

7.4 GLOBAL TEMPERATURE CHANGES


The free thermal expansion and contraction will be restricted due to the integral piers, and, thus, the restrained forces will act on the system.

7.5 DIFFERENTIAL TEMPERATURE EFFECTS


The differential temperature is applied as per cl. 215.4 of IRC 6.

7.6 Effect of Creep and Shrinkage


Effect of Shrinkage Strain:
The Shrinkage Strain is composed of two components:
1. Autogenous Shrinkage Strain
2. Drying Shrinkage Strain

1. Autogenous Shrinkage Strain:


The major part of the Autogenous Shrinkage Strain develops during the hardening of the concrete in the early days after casting.
In this case, the girders will be cast in the casting yard and will be brought to the site after many days of casting.
Thus, the Autogenous Shrinkage Strain effect on Substructure Design will be Negligible.

2. Drying Shrinkage Strain:


The drying shrinkage strain develops slowly and is a function of the migration of water through the hardened concrete.
This will affect the design of the substructure and foundation as the shrinkage strain will lead to shear deformation in the bearing
which will result in longitudinal forces on the substructure and foundation.

Effect of Creep
The creep in the superstructure will lead to the shortening of the superstructure, thereby leading to shear strain in the bearing
which will lead to longitudinal forces.

The shrinkage and creep parameters are defined in the analysis model for obtaining the design forces.

7.7 WIND FORCES


The WIND FORCEs are applied as per cl. 209 of IRC 6 .

Max Height of Structure from Ground Level = 48.30 m
Taken as Maximum for the Module, Height of Crash Barrier is included

As per IRC 6 2017 cl. 209.3.7, the live load is not considered to act on the bridge if the speed of wind exceeds 36 m/s.
Hence, WIND FORCEs are computed for two cases i.e. without live load and with live load.

7.7.2 WIND FORCES WITH LIVE LOAD


As per cl. 209.3.7 of IRC 6, the bridge shall not be cosndiered to be carrying any live load when the wind speed at deck
level exceeds 36 m/s.
Thus, the maximum wind speed is restricted to 36 m/s for the calculation of wind forces with live load.
However, in this condition, the exposed area of the vehicle shall also be considered for the calculation of the wind forces.
