Design of
Pier Shaft and
Pile Foundation
for Free Piers of
Pier Group 5
INTRODUCTION
The design note contains design of Pier shaft and pile foundation for Free Pier P3R and is valid for piers
with heights 30m to 35m from FRL to GL. Piers P3R P6R P7R P12L P13L P16R P43L&R
come under this group and same design is applicable.
The Pier is Hollow rectangular type and Pier cap is widened in transverse direction to accommodate
bearings. The Pier cap is to be designed as a cantilever in the transverse. The Pier column is designed as axial
member subjected to compressive force and biaxial bending. The Foundation slab has been designed by
bending theory.
Seismic coefficient has been calculated considering fixity at pier base giving higher structural stiffness which
is a conservative approach. The design of Foundation is carried out using capacity design principle as per
Chapter 6 of IRC:SP:114-2018. The design of Pier is carried out using R=3 and for the design of foundation,
the seismic forces are taken as lesser of seismic force due to capacity design and seismic force corresponding
to R=1.

The maximum resultant moment on each pile as calculated from the forces in seismic case are compared
with the moment resultants based on capacity design of Pier. As pier is designed with elastomeric bearings
R=1 is adopted in pier design and foundation design. Hence capacity design is not done.
The second order effects of pile is considered using method based on nominal stiffness as per Amendment
No. 7/IRC:112/November, 2018.
