Design of
Pier Shaft and
Pile Foundation
for Free Piers of
Pier Group 5
INTRODUCTION

The design note contains design of Pier shaft and pile foundation for Free Pier P3R and is valid for piers
with heights 30m to 35m from FRL to GL. Piers P3R P6R P7R P12L P13L P16R P43L&R
come under this group and same design is applicable.

The Span arrangement consists of superstructure of span 40.000 m C/C

of expansion joint on one side and superstructure of span 40.000 m C/C
of expansion joint on other side.

The Pier is Hollow rectangular type and Pier cap is widened in transverse direction to accommodate
bearings. The Pier cap is to be designed as a cantilever in the transverse. The Pier column is designed as axial
member subjected to compressive force and biaxial bending. The Foundation slab has been designed by
bending theory.

Seismic coefficient has been calculated considering fixity at pier base giving higher structural stiffness which
is a conservative approach. The design of Foundation is carried out using capacity design principle as per
Chapter 6 of IRC:SP:114-2018. The design of Pier is carried out using R=3 and for the design of foundation,
the seismic forces are taken as lesser of seismic force due to capacity design and seismic force corresponding
to R=1.

The Bridge has been designed with POT/PTFE bearings

The Bridge is located in Seismic zone II
basic wind speed Is 44 m/s

The following force have been considered in the analysis

1 Dead load and SIDL from superstructure.
2 Braking and carriage way live loads
3 Seismic forces
4 Wind Loads

Zone Factor z 0.1 (from IRC)
Importance factor I 1.5
Type of Soil Hard Soil
E 32000000 KN/m2

Depth of Fixity (Seismic Scour Level)

Depth of Fixity (LF) is given by plots in Fig. 2 (Append.C) of IS:2911 between LF/R or LF/T

Lf = Depth of Fixity
L1 = Height above ground level of Lateral Forces = 9.25 m
Therefore, Maximum Moment in Pile, M = 4.63 * Q

Depth of Fixity (Normal Scour Level)

Depth of Fixity (LF) is given by plots in Fig. 2 (Append.C) of IS:2911 between LF/R or LF/T

Lf = Depth of Fixity
L1 = Height above ground level of Lateral Forces = 9.25 m
T = ( E*I/ hh)1/5
Therefore, Maximum Moment in Pile, M = 4.63 * Q

9.6 Design of Pile (ULS) with Min. Axial load on Pile

(designed using limit state method)

Grade of concrete = M 35
Grade of steel = 550 Mpa
Clear cover provided 75 mm
d' = 98 mm
D= 1200 mm
d'/D= 0.10
Main reinforcement dia (Outer bar type 1) = 25 mm
Number of bars provided 26 nos
Clear Spacing of bars 96 mm < 200mm, hence ok
Total area of main steel provided 12763 mm2
pt provided 1.13 %

The maximum resultant moment on each pile as calculated from the forces in seismic case are compared
with the moment resultants based on capacity design of Pier. As pier is designed with elastomeric bearings
R=1 is adopted in pier design and foundation design. Hence capacity design is not done.

The second order effects of pile is considered using method based on nominal stiffness as per Amendment
No. 7/IRC:112/November, 2018.

Depth of neutral axis from outer compression fibre can be calculated by equating the area moment of
concrete in compression and equivalent steel in tension about neutral axis. Rearranging this gives a
quadratic equation in dc which can be solved by finding roots

Ardeen Infratech Page 42 of 72

Six Lane Raipur Visakapatnam Economic Corridor Pkg-OD8 Design of Viaduct at 351+423

(bt * dc2)/2 = mAs*(d-dc) => dc2 + 2mAs/bt *dc - 2mAs/bt*d = 0

Value of 2mAs/bt = 164.7 => dc2 + 164.7*dc - 164.7*d = 0
Depth of neutral axis or concrete in compression, dc = (-b±√(b2-4ac))/2a
where, a= 1 , b= 164.7 and c= -356185
dc = 520 mm or -685 mm
Knowing the depth of neutral axis, stress in concrete and steel can be calculated using the moment
equation. Substituting the design moment & other parameters gives stress in concrete
M = bt*dc*σc/2*(d-dc/3)
Design bending moment in trans. direction = 6489 kNm
=> 6488741475 = 3879643990 σc
Stress in concrete σc = 1.67 MPa Hence safe
Stresses are assumed to be within linear elastic limit, hence stress in respective concrete fibre and in steel
are proportional to their distance from neutral axis
σc/dc = σst /m(d - dc) Stress in steel σst = 42.3 MPa Hence safe

In Longitudinal direction
Value of 2mAs/bt = 127.4
Depth of neutral axis, dc = = 461.9 mm
Design bending moment = 29079 kNm
