HEAD LOSSES

It is the energy losses in a hydraulic system due

to frictional resistance.
It is categorized into two types:
Major Head Loss
Minor Head Loss
MAJOR HEAD LOSS
Major Head Loss, which is caused by pipe
friction along straight sections of pipe of uniform
diameter and uniform roughness.

It is typically calculated using empirical equations

such as the Darcy-Weisbach Formula, Manning
Formula, or Hazen-Williams Formula.

HAZEN WILLIAM
FORMULA

The Hazen William formula is widely usded in

watermarks industry. This formula is applicable only to
the flow of water in pipes larger than 50 mm(2 in) and
velocities less than 3m/s. Thus formula was designed for
flow in both pipes and open channels but is more
commonly used in pipes.

the discharge if the head lost is 175 m.
SOLUTION
PROBLEM NO. 1

A discharge of flow 600 liters/sec flows through a

pipe having a diameter of 400mm, length of 40 m.
long, compute the headloss of the pipeline using;
Mannings Equation with n=0.013
Darcy Weishbach formula with f=0.012
Hazen Williams Formula with C= 100
