OFFICER OF THE WATCH

(Reg II/1) 2023/24


Post HND Nautical Science

This course is specifically designed for serving Deck ratings holding a valid UK HND Nautical Science. The course
will enable candidates to achieve a UK Certificate of Competency at Officer of the Watch (STCW 95) Level by the
SQA examination route.

The course is intended for:


• Those students who initially attended a partner Institute/College overseas and who subsequently came to
CoGC to complete an HND in Nautical Science, prior to proceeding to sea to obtain the required seatime for
eligibility to the OOW Written and Oral Examinations held by the MCA.
• Those students from TUDEV Turkey after having their portfolios verified (for SVQ level 2 & 3) by CoGC.
• Those students who previously attended CoGC as part of their BSC degree.

A. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

1. HND Nautical Science with no units outstanding (studied in the UK or as part of a 1+1 programme with City
of Glasgow College overseas partner institutions where year 2 of HND is completed in Glasgow)
2. Minimum sea service:
a. Ex HND candidates – 15 months within 5 years of date of enrolment on course
b. Ex BSC candidates - 12 months within 5 years of date of enrolment on course
Must include documented evidence of having kept a bridge watch, under the supervision of a
qualified Officer,
or a period of at least 6 months (for 8 hours out of 24 hours) during the last 12 months sea time.
3. Training Record Book completed to required standard
4. Operational Workbook/Journal completed to required standard

The above requirements are for entry onto the college programme. For further information on the requirements for
an OOW CoC please refer to MSN 1856, MIN 563 and MSF 4274.

If you have HND Units outstanding, please contact maritime@cityofglasgowcollege.ac.uk to arrange to sit
these units. A space will not be offered on the Officer of the Watch Post HND Course until you have fully
passed your HND.

Passage Planning, Tides, Sailing and Bridge Watchkeeping

Stability, Deck Watchkeeping, Pollution Prevention and Legislation

Candidates who successfully complete all elements will be issued with an Education and Training Certificate
(A+B). Please note: A CoC cannot be issued unless the student has a valid E&T (A+B) certificate.

Proficiency in Medical First Aid

A valid MCA Proficiency in Medical First Aid Certificate is a requirement of the OOW CoC. There have been recent
changes to the list of Approved Training Providers (ATPs) and the list can be found here.

C. APPLICATION PROCESS

1. Send a fully completed Course Application Form to marine@cityofglasgowcollege.ac.uk, including:


Required supporting documents:
a. Copy of current Discharge Book
b. Evidence of Seatime – Testimonials from ship or a copy of NOE (UK MCA)
c. Copy of HND Nautical Science Certificate
d. Copy of Passport (photo and address page - visa applications only)
2. Upon successful inspection of your initial documents, we will provide a file sharing link so you may send us your
Training Record Book (TRB) and Workbook.
We ask that you do not email us your TRB or workbook
3. You upload your files as either one continuous file or as 2 separate files.
4. We will review your work and issue one of the following:
• Unconditional Offer: No further action required apart from payment
• Conditional Offer: An offer of a place, subject to meeting specified requirements
• Refusal: Significant improvement is required before admission may be considered
5. Pay initial deposit £1000 within 7 days of offer letter to confirm your place
6. Pay full course fee by application deadline.
Please note visa support letters will not be issued until full course fee is paid.
7. College will issue a Visa Support Letter after application deadline date and after fees are paid
8. College will issue joining instructions approximately 2 weeks prior to course start date

D. TRAINING RECORD BOOK

As part of your application, you will be asked to submit scanned copies of your entire MNTB Training Record Book
(TRB) and Workbook/Journal to the College. Upon satisfactory review of your initial documents, the College will
contact you with details on how to submit these files. On receipt the College will provide guidance on ensuring you
meet the criteria.
• The Record Book must be completed in entirety without any omissions.
• All testimonials must be fully and correctly completed showing bridge watchkeeping and time served.
• Priority, familiarisation and safety tasks should be completed for each ship, even if you go on the same
ship twice.
• All relevant tasks must be completed. The MCA also expect all workbooks and journals to be completed as
per page 100/101 in TRB.
• Workbooks are evidence that bridge watchkeeping time has been completed and tasks have been correctly
carried out and not just signed off.

Once the college is satisfied with the TRB a support letter for your NOE application shall be issued. The MCA will
refuse you an NOE and give additional seatime if the TRB is falsely completed.

E. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS - VISA REQUIREMENTS

For International applicants who meet the course and college entry requirements, the college will issue a Short
Term Study Visa Support Document this should be used to apply for a Student Visitor Visa. Students should note
that they must have a valid passport for the duration of stay.
