student. You feel that the building should be saved. You decide to write a proposal for the
town council explaining why you think the building should be preserved, suggesting what
could be done to modernize it and saying how the building could benefit the local people.

Introduction

The aim of this proposal is to suggest ways in which the old and abandoned Kavitha Cinemas
can be renovated to be used as a building for community recreation. The proposal explains
the current state of the building along with views and opinions of the local residents, as well
as suggestions and recommendations to transform it back into a highlight of our town.

Current Situation

Kavitha Cinemas had been the pride of Bangalore in the 80’s and mid-90’s. It was the first
and the only modern cinema hall in the town that could accommodate around a hundred
and fifty people. It was also the first to have a balcony seating. Unfortunately, in the late
90’s, with the advent of malls, and cinemas that featured digital surround sound, more
comfortable cushioned seating, kiosks for food, and the convenience of watching a movie
after shopping, Kavitha Cinemas gradually slipped into oblivion, making it a thing of the past.
Currently, it stands in our town as an abandoned and forgotten building. A survey conducted
among the local residents brought to light the fact that people want it to be renovated and
brought back to life.

Suggestions

The survey and discussions with residents’ associations on renovating Kavitha Cinemas and
using the building again encouraged many suggestions that are listed below:
  a complete renovation of the building
 change of name
 a community recreation centre
 provision for coffee shop, library, and space for the elderly to socialise
 utilisation of the upper floor as yoga and dance studio

Final recommendations

If the suggestions given are implemented, Kavitha Cinemas can be one of the major
attractions of our town. Painting and renovation of the building will ensure that it is usable.
A change in the name of the building will be appropriate; the residents suggest “Kavitha
Recreation Centre”. Modern interiors, opening a coffee shop inside along with a small
library, and a space for the senior citizens will ensure that people visit the building.
Additionally, converting the upper floor to a state-of-the-art yoga and dance studio will
benefit children, even adults, to learn yoga and dancing, thereby promoting an active
lifestyle. The implementation of these ideas will ensure the imperative transformation of
Kavitha Cinemas from an old, abandoned building to a brand new, useful recreation centre
for our town.
