To be ready in our next lesson, let us check your mastery of the topic.
Identify the solid figures.
1. _____________

2. _____________

3. _____________

Identify whether its a width or length

4. _____________

5. _____________

What’s New

Look at the illustration below. Answer the question below base on the dimensions
found in the illustration.

1. What is the height of the prism? _____

Height = 4 cm

2. What is the height of the pyramid? _____

3. What is the width of the prism? _____
4. What is the width of the pyramid? _____
5. What is the length of the prism? _____
6. What is the length of the pyramid? _____

How is the rectangular prism related to

Length = 3 cm
the pyramid?
Let’s check it out.

3
What Is It
Figure A

A rectangular prism is
a polyhedron with a rectangular base
and faces corresponding to each side of a
base. The faces which are not bases are height
called lateral faces. The volume of this
prism is measured by multiplying its width
length, width and height. Length

Pyramid has a base and three or more

triangular faces that meet at a point Figure B
above the base (the apex) as shown in figure B. The
base is a polygon (flat with straight edges) and all
other faces are triangles. It has no curves.

In figure C, the pyramid and the rectangular

prism has the same height. If you try to look at their
width ang length, what can you say about them?
Do they have the same measurement?
Figure C
Base on the illustration in figure D, a pyramid fits
inside a rectangular prism. This shows that a pyramid is
related to the rectangular prism if it has same height , width
and length.
If we place water inside a prism, the amount of water
inside a rectangular prism is called VOLUME of a
rectangular prism.
If we place water inside a pyramid, the amount of water
inside a pyramid is called VOLUME of a pyramid. If we Figure D
look at the front view of a rectangular prism with a pyramid
inside, the view looks like the illustration on figure E.
We can see that the rectangular prism is divided into 3
because of the pyramid inside. Through this illustration we
1
got the concept that a pyramid is of the volume of a
3
rectangular prism.

The relationship between the volume

of pyramid and prism is that when a prism Figure E
and pyramid have the same base and height,
1
the volume of the pyramid is of the volume of
3
the prism. This is shown in the figure below

4
.
The length and the width of the rectangular
prism is what we called the Area of the
Base of a pyramid.

BH B = area of the base

H = height

What’s More

Direction: Write a if the pyramid has the same size with the rectangular prism
and if the pyramid is having different size with the rectangular prism.

1. __________

2. __________

3. __________

What I Have Learned

Direction: fill in the blanks to measure your understanding of the lesson. Choose
the answer from the choices below.
1
same width three height
3
A pyramid has three dimensions namely the length, the ______________
and the _____________. The rectangular prism has also ______________
dimensions which is the same as the pyramid. If a pyramid is equal to the size of a
rectangular prism, their base is also the ______________. The volume of a pyramid
is ______________ of the volume of a rectangular prism.

5
What I Can Do

Direction: Base on the illustration below answer the questions correctly.

_____ 1. What is the height of the pyramid?

_____ 2. What is the width of the rectangular
prism? h = 7cm

_____ 3. What is the length of the pyramid?

_____ 4. What is the height of the rectangular
prism? w = 5.2 cm
_____ 5. What is the width of the pyramid?

l = 3.4 cm

Lesson 3.2
Determining the Relationship of the Volume
Between a Cylinder and Cone
What’s In
To be ready in our next lesson, let us check your mastery of the topic.
Identify the solid figures.
1. _____________

2. _____________

Identify whether its a base or a height

3. _____________

4. _____________

5. _____________

6
What’s New

Look at the illustration below. Answer the question below base on the dimensions
found in the illustration.

1. What is the height of the cone? _____

2. What is the height of the cylinder? _____
3. What is the diameter of the base of the cone?_____ height = 10 cm
4. What is the diametert of the base of the cylinder? _____
5. Which is bigger in size the cone or the cylinder? _____

How is the cone related to the cylinder?

Let’s check it out. Diameter = 3cm

What Is It

A cone is a distinctive three-dimensional geometric Figure A

figure that has a flat surface and a curved surface, pointed
towards the top. The pointed end of the cone is called
the apex, whereas the flat surface is called the base. The
base is circle in shape. This is what a cone looks like:
The three main properties of a cone are as follows:
 It has one circular face.
 It has zero edges.
 It has one vertex (corner).
Figure B
The black broken arrow is the height of the cone.

a cylinder is a three-dimensional solid that holds two

parallel bases joined by a curved surface, at a fixed distance.
These bases are normally circular in shape (like a circle) and the
center of the two bases are joined by a line segment, which is
called the axis.

7
Figure C
If we try to look at figure C, the cone has only 1 base while
the cylinder has two. The height and the size of the base of the
two figures are the same.
In figure D we can see that the cone fits inside the cylinder with
the same height. It proves that a cone filled with water cannot fill
the cylinder. There should be three cones of water to fill a cylinder.

The relationship between the volume of cone and volume of

cylinder is that when a cone
and cylinder have the same base, height and radius Figure D
1
the volume of the cone is of the volume of cylinder. This is
3
shown in the figure below.

What’s More

Direction: Draw a if the cone has the same size with the cylinder and
if the cone is having different size with the cylinder.

1. __________

2. __________

3. __________

8
What I Have Learned

Direction: fill in the blanks to measure your understanding of the lesson. Choose the
answer from the choices below.
