Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics Grade 6

I. I. Lesson objectives
At the end of the 50-minute discussion, the learner should be able to;
A. visualize and describe different solid figures using various concrete pictorial models
B. differentiate solid from plane figures
C. identify all parts of a solid figure
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: Understanding Solid Figures
B. References: Teacher’s Guide Pages MELC MATHG6Q3 P.224 K-12 MATH CURRICULUM

C. Materials: PowerPoint presentation, laptop, pictures, wordwall.
III. Lesson Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Motivation

Before we begin to our new discussion let us all watch first the
video I prepared. Watch properly and listen carefully because
this vid

https://youtu.be/Ybcawah5Ebk

B. Presentation

Now, can you tell me about what’s on the video ?

It’s all about Solid and Plane figures

Base on the video, what is solid figure ?
A Solid figure is a 3-dimensional
figure namely length, width and
height
How about Plane figure ?
A plane figure is a 2-dimensional
figure name length and width
C. Discussion

Now, let’s have an exercise. I will show you different pictures

and just tell whether it is a Yes example or a No example.
1.

A pyramid. Is it a Yes or No example ? Yes example

2.

A Philippine peso coin. Is it a Yes or No example ?

No example
3.

A television. Is it a Yes or No example ?

Yes example
4.

A sponge. Is it a Yes or No example ?

Yes example
5.

A face towel. Is it a Yes or No example ? No example

6.

An empty can. Is it a Yes or No example ? Yes example

7.

A wall clock. Is it a Yes or No example ? No example

8.

An ice cube. Is it a Yes or No example ? Yes example

9.

A credit card. Is it a Yes or No example ? No example

10.

An orange fruit. Is it a Yes or a No example ? Yes example

11.

A cabinet. Is it a Yes or No example ? Yes example

Now class, why did you say that those figures are Yes example
and No examples, how did you came up with the idea that
those are yes and no examples ?
The Yes examples represents solid
figures while the No examples
represents plane figures
Why did you say that the Yes example are Solid figures ?
Because of the presence of the
height in the object, compared to a
plane figure which is completely flat
and has no height.
So what is solid figure ?

Solid figure has 3 dimensions;length, width and height. It has

different parts which are the edges, faces, vertices and the
base.

Now, can you give me your own example of 3 dimensional

figure that you can see around your home ?
(random students will be recognized
with their own examples of solid
figure)
So those what you have been given are examples of solid
figures.

Now, how about Plane figure. What is a Plane Figure?

A Plane figure has two dimensions namely length and the

width. It is made up of line segments/curves or arcs joined
together in a plane.

Give me your own examples of Plane figure that you can see
around your home.
(random students will be recognized
with their own examples of plane
figure)
Now you already understand what is solid and plane figure.
Let’s now move on into the different kinds of solid figures and
its parts.
Let’s have first the representation of solid figure and its parts.
Let’s have the different kind of Solid Figure

Look at the picture. What figure is that ?

A sphere
Are you sure? Is it not a Circle ?
No, because Circle is a plane and
sphere is a solid
Yes. Sphere is completely different from a circle. Circle is plane
figure while sphere is a plane.
Can you give me an example of sphere ?
Ball
Globe
Do you know how many edges, vertex and faces does sphere
has ?
Sphere is completely round and
doesn’t have any faces, edges and
vertices.
Ok let us take a look to the next picture

A cone.

What is a cone ?
A Cone is a three-dimensional geometric shape that tapers
smoothly from a flat base to a point called the apex or vertex.
As you seen in the picture, how many edges, vertices and faces
does a cone has ?
Cone has one vertex, 2 faces and no
edges.
How about it’s base ?
It has circular base
The next solid figure is..

A Cylinder

What is Cylinder ?
A cylinder is a three-dimensional solid figure which has two
identical circular bases joined by a curved surface at a
particular distance from the center which is the height of the
cylinder.
As you seen in the picture. How many edges, faces and 2 circular faces, no edges and
vertices does a cylinder has ? vertices
Let’s move on to the next..

What you see is some of the different types of Pyramid.

Triangular, Square, Pentagonal and Rectangular pyramid

Name Faces Edges Vertex Base

Triangular 4 6 4 Triangle
pyramid
Square 5 8 5 Square
pyramid
Pentagonal 6 10 6 Pentagon
pyramid
Rectangular 4 8 5 Rectangle
pyramid
Next is Prism.

What is Prism ?
Prism is a three-dimensional solid object in which the two ends
are identical. It is the combination of the flat faces, identical
bases and equal cross-sections.

Like Pyramid, Prism also has different types:

Name Faces Edges Vertex Base

Triangular 5 9 6 Triangle
prism
Square prism 6 12 8 Square
Rectangular 6 12 8 Rectangle
prism
Pentagonal 7 15 10 Pentagon
prism
Hexagonal 8 18 12 Hexagon
prism
Octagonal 8 24 16 Octagon
prism

D. Generalization

Answer the following questions.

1. What is Solid Figure?
2. What is Plane Figure?
3. Give all the parts of Solid Figure
4. Differentiate Pyramid from Prism
5. Give your own 5 examples of solid and plane
figures that you can see around your home.

E. Values Integration

Class. There’s a lot of solid and plane figures around us and

we are using it in our every day lives, If you are just going to
observe and noticed everything around you, you will
appreciate and realized how creative God is. You will also learn
and realize the value of it . You will learn that everything has
it’s own beautiful shapes and purpose in life.
