Broadcast media?
- is a large industry with creative, technical and
managerial positions. Broadcasting careers are an
important role in the entertainment industry and a
valuable source for sharing information with the
public. A career in broadcasting could interest you if
you enjoy creating, performing and watching or
listening to television and radio programs. In this
article, we share broadcasting careers in television,
radio and sales and explain their primary job duties.

What is a broadcasting career?


-Broadcasting delivers media through mediums
such as television and radio. A broadcasting
career could involve creating broadcasts such as
news programs, sportscasts or radio shows.
Many careers in broadcasting require a
bachelor's degree in broadcasting,
communications or journalism. Good
communication and presentation skills are
important for all types of careers in the broadcast
industry.

 Broadcasting careers
1. Camera Operator
Camera operators film video for broadcast. They
may write, follow and rehearse scripts. Camera
operators collaborate with directors and talent to
determine how to shoot scenes.

 Studio Camera Operator
Typically working in a broadcast
studio, studio camera operators
record their subjects from a fixed
position such as a stage or set. As an
entry-level position, the director
usually guides the camera operator as
to what the shot order is, what the
angles should be, and who to focus
on at any given time.
 Electronic News Gathering
Operator
This camera operator is normally
found working with a reporting team.
They follow reporters who are
delivering breaking news stories and
often film the stories live as they
unfold live.
 Cinematographer
The most coveted camera operator
position is that of the
cinematographer. Working in the
motion picture and film industries,
cinematographers use stationary
cameras, cameras mounted on tracks
that move, or even control cranes that
hold camera equipment above a scene
for recording.

2. Production Assistant
Production assistants work in studios and on sets
to assist producers, directors and other film crew
members. They help adjust lighting and set up
equipment before filming. Production assistants
may also attend to guests and on-air
personalities. For some projects, this may
include handling duties such as scheduling guest
interviews, answering phone calls and
coordinating transportation and catering services.

Field PAs are available on film sets
during filming. They are often tasked
with keeping the set clean, managing
rental equipment, helping transport
cast and crew, and even taking food
orders at mealtimes.
 Office Production Assistants
Office PAs work in the production
office and help out with all the
clerical work that needs to be done.
They’ll spend most of their time
answering the phone, handling
paperwork, and keeping the offices
tidy.
 Post Production Assistants
Postproduction PAs support the film
crew members who work on the
footage after filming. They help the
editors and producers by organizing
content and keeping the offices clean.

3. Music Director
A music director oversees music programming
and plans music for events. They may manage
the music production and schedule both artists
and musicians for recording sessions. Music
directors can compose music and transpose work
from other composers. In movies and television,
a music director selects the songs for the film.
4. News reporter
A news reporter researches current events and
collects information to present accurate reports
to the public. They may interview witnesses,
track leads and write or edit news stories. News
reporters may also appear on camera to present
their news stories.
5. News Producer
A news producer collaborates with the news
director to select broadcast content. They design
news shows to include reports, graphics and
video content. They also set filming schedules
and tell the production crew and special guests
when to arrive and how much time they will
spend at the filming location.
6. .Sound Engineers
Sound engineers operate sound equipment. They
can enhance audio, add sound effects and record
audio. For live shows and performances, they
help set up equipment including microphones,
speakers and instruments. Sound engineers also
edit audio and correct sound issues that may
occur, such as feedback from microphones or
faulty speakers.
7. Video Editor
Video editors assemble and edit raw video files
and prepare the film for broadcast. They may
perform sound editing such as adjusting volume,
reducing background noise or adding special
sound effects. Editors also add video transitions
or color correct footage to ensure a clean and
aesthetically pleasing final product. Video
editors may collaborate with directors to make
edits on the film.

8. Graphic Artist
A graphic artist creates artwork and images for
media use. Graphic artists make subtitles and
headlines for news programming use their
knowledge of editing and design software to
create visuals for advertisements.
9. Studio Manager
Studio managers work closely with clients and
manage projects in a creative studio. They assign
work and review designs before submitting the
work to clients. Studio managers may also
handle invoicing and payroll.
10. Radio Technician
A radio technician primarily maintains
equipment at the radio station. They may install
new transmitters and receiving devices and make
repairs to this equipment as needed.
11. Disc Jockey
Disc jockeys are radio personalities who perform
various tasks to run a radio show, including
managing the set list, setting music and
commercials to air according to schedule and
introducing acts or news segments. Disc jockeys
may also interview musical guests and other
personalities that the station invites to the show.
12. Broadcaster
Broadcasters are television or radio personalities
who deliver the news on screen. They may serve
as news anchors or sports broadcasters. They
may also often perform duties such as writing
and directing the news or perform voice-overs
for commercials and news segments.
13. Copy Writer
Copywriters write and edit content for news
scripts and other mediums. Copywriters may
need to do extensive research for their work and
verify sources to ensure accurate content.
14. News Editor
A news editor revises news stories, checks for
facts and accuracy and designs creative ways to
present the news. News editors are responsible
for monitoring what goes on air. For print media,
news editors aid in publishing stories.

15. Program Editor


The program director researches, plans and
implements new strategies for the organization.
In a news studio, this means they create
programming plans for what airs on television.
Program directors manage timelines and the
progression of projects and stories.
16. Sales Manager
Sales managers design strategies and campaigns
for businesses to increase visibility and help
build clientele. They set goals for the sales team
and monitor progress toward reaching goals.
Sales managers in broadcasting sell their
stations' ad space to businesses.
17. Broadcast Engineer
The primary role of a broadcast engineer is to
operate transmitters for television and radio
programming. An engineer may install and
maintain new equipment in a studio. They ensure
that special effects, graphics, commercials and
live video airs correctly.

18. News Director


News directors primarily oversee the operations
of the newsroom. They ensure the news station's
compliance with laws and journalistic standards.
They also direct reporters, engineers and camera
operators during live broadcasts of the news.
