PROBLEM NO. 1
The two circular rod segments one of aluminum and the other a copper, are fixed to the rigid walls such that
there is a gap of 0.008 inches between them when the temperature is 60℉. Each rod has a diameter of 1.25
inches. 𝛼!" = 13𝑥10#$ ⁄℉, 𝐸!" = 10𝑥10$ 𝑝𝑠𝑖, 𝛼%& = 9.4𝑥10#$ ⁄℉, 𝐸%& = 18𝑥10$ 𝑝𝑠𝑖. Determine the average
normal stress in each rod if the temperature is 300℉, and also calculate the new length of the aluminum
segment.

PROBLEM NO. 2
A rigid horizontal bar of negligible mass is connected to two rods as shown in the figure. If the system is initially
stress-free. Determine the temperature change that will cause a tensile stress of 90 MPa in the brass rod.
Assume that both rods are subjected to the change in temperature.

PROBLEM NO. 3
The compound shaft shown is attached to rigid supports. For the bronze segment AB, the diameter is 75mm,
𝜏' ≤ 60 𝑀𝑁/𝑚( and G = 35 GN/m2. For the steel segment BC, the diameter is 50mm, 𝜏' ≤ 80 𝑀𝑁/𝑚( , and G
= 83 GN/m2. If a=2m and b=1.5m, compute the maximum torque that can be applied.

PROBLEM NO. 4
A flanged bolt coupling consists of six 12-mm diameter steel bolts evenly
spaced around a bolt circle 300-mm in diameter, and four 19-mm diameter
aluminum bolts on a concentric bolt circle 200-mm in diameter. What torque
can be applied without exceeding shear stress 60 𝑀𝑃𝑎 in the steel or
40 𝑀𝑃𝑎 in the aluminum? Assume 𝐺)* = 83 𝐺𝑃𝑎 and 𝐺!" = 28 𝐺𝑃𝑎.
