Permanent Magnet Development

Permanent Magnet Motors

Synchronous Motor with Permanent Magnet Excitation

1-Trapezoidal type (Brush-less DC Motor)

2- Sinusoidal type
Permanent Magnet Motors

Self-controlled Synchronous Motors

Permanent Magnet Motors

It has a similar characteristics of

DC motors

Closed-loop operation of self-controlled Synchronous Motors

Permanent Magnet Motors

Permanent Magnet Motors

Permanent Magnet Motors

Position sensor controls switches on and off instants so that the

angle between stator and rotor fields is 90o (as in conventional
DC motors)

Supply is DC current source (CSI) or PWM-VSI

Inverter switches are turned-on every 600

Position sensor of low resolution

Trapezoidal type
Permanent Magnet Motors

Sinusoidal type

requires • Sinusoidal currents

• High resolution position sensor

For lower torque ripples • Distributed windings

• Sinusoidal air-gap flux

• Specially-shaped magnets

Sinusoidal Trapezoidal
type type
Permanent Magnet Motors

Rotor types According magnet position and orientation

Surface mounted magnets

Inset magnet

Buried magnets with radial magnetization Interior PM (IPM)

Buried magnets with circumferential magnetization

Permanent Magnet Motors

Ld = L q (Non salient)

Large effective air gap length

Low value of Ld

Suitable for trapezoidal type due

to constant air gap that may
provide constant flux density

Surface mounted magnets

Permanent Magnet Motors

L d < Lq Saliency

Higher torque than

surface mounted due
to saliency

Higher value of Ld

Inset magnet
Permanent Magnet Motors

Ld < Lq More saliency

Higher torque than of inset

magnet type for the same
magnet size

Both Ld and Lq are higher

than of inset magnet type

Buried magnets with radial magnetization Interior PM (IPM)

Permanent Magnet Motors

Ld > Lq More saliency

Higher torque than of

IPM type

Higher Ld

Buried magnets with circumferential magnetization

Permanent Magnet Motors
Operation at high speeds
Beyond base speed wb Flux weakening
Required negative d-axis flux linkage (IdLd)
Higher Ld requires lower Id

Surface mounted magnets Up to 1.2 wb

Inset magnet Up to 1.5 wb

Interior PM (IPM) Up to 2 wb

Buried magnets with circumferential Up to 3 wb
