Estimate
• An estimate is the anticipated or probable cost of work and is usually
prepared before the construction is taken up.
• Estimating is the technique of calculating or computing the various quantities
and the expected expenditure to be incurred on a particular work or project.
Quantity Surveying

• The appraisal method of estimating construction costs by calculating the cost

of all the physical components adding the cost to assemble them and then
including the indirect costs associated with such construction is termed as
“Quantity Survey”.

Dr. Sudarshan D. Kore, NICMAR University, Pune 6

Need for Estimation and Costing
➢To know the quantities of various items of work, a material and
labour and their source of identification.
➢To decide whether the proposal can match the available funds to
complete the structure.
➢To obtain the administrative and technical sanction of estimate from
the competent authorities to release the funds for construction.
➢To invite tenders or quotations based on the estimate quantities for
entrust of works to the execution.

Drawings
i.e. plans, élévations, sections etc.
Data Required Detailed specifications about
for Estimation workmanship & properties of materials
etc.
Standard schedule of rates of
the current year

Dr. Sudarshan D. Kore, NICMAR University, Pune 8

1. DRAWINGS

If the drawings are not clear and without complete dimensions the preparation of estimation become very
difficult. So, It is very essential before preparing an estimate.

2. SPECIFICATIONS

a) General Specifications:

This gives the nature, quality, class , work and materials in general terms to be used in various parts of wok.

It helps to form a general idea.

Dr. Sudarshan D. Kore, NICMAR University, Pune 9

b) Detailed Specifications:
These gives the detailed description of the various items of work, laying down the Quantities and qualities of
materials, their proportions, the method of preparation workmanship and execution of work.

3. RATES
For preparing the estimate the unit rates of each item of work are required.

1. For arriving at the unit rates of each item.

2. The rates of various materials to be used in the construction.

3. The cost of transport materials.

4. The wages of labour, skilled or unskilled of masons, carpenters, Mazdoor, etc.,

The complete estimate consist of some direct & indirect cost

Dr. Sudarshan D. Kore, NICMAR University, Pune 12

Lump-sum
• While preparing an estimate, it is not possible to workout in detail in case of
petty items. Items other than civil engineering will be placed under Lump-sum
items.
• The following are some of L.S Items in the estimate.
1.Water supply and sanitary arrangements.
2.Electrical installations like meter, motor, etc.,
3.Architectural features.
4.Contengencies and un-forseen items.
• In general, certain percentage on the cost of estimation is allotted for Lump-
sum Items.
• Even if sub estimates prepared or at the end of execution of the work, the
actual cost should not exceed the Lump-sum amounts provided in main
estimate.

Measurements of Works

Dr. Sudarshan D. Kore, NICMAR University, Pune 14

Fundamentals
1. 1 ft = 0.3048m
2. 1 sq.ft = 1 ft x 1ft
= 0.3048m x 0.3048m
= 0.0929 sq m
3. 1 cu. ft = 1ft x 1ft x 1ft
= 0.3048m x 0.3048m x 0.3048m
= 0.0283cu m
4. 1m = 3.28 ft
5. 1sqm = 3.28ft x 3.28ft
= 10.76 sqft
6. 1 cum = 3.28ft x 3.28ft x 3.28ft
= 35.3147 cuft

MEASUREMENT

• Measurement has a very important place in Planning and

Execution of any Civil Engineering work.

• It is required from first estimate to the final completion of

work and payment settlements.

Dr. Sudarshan D. Kore, NICMAR University, Pune 16

GENRAL RULES
❑ Each item shall be fully described and shall include all necessary materials,
transport, unloading, stacking, storing, wastage in handling, labour required
for finishing the work etc.
❑ Booking of dimensions is done in order of length, breadth or width and height or
depth or thickness.
❑ Dimensions shall be nearest
• 0.01 m in length
• 0.01 m2 in areas
• 0.01 m3 in volumes
• 0.001 tonnes in weights

❑ Same work with different conditions or stages must be measured separately

stating the condition, height or depth or distances.

Dr. Sudarshan D. Kore, NICMAR University, Pune 17

UNITS OF MEASUREMENTS
➢Mass, voluminous and thick works shall be taken in cubic unit or volume( M3).

➢Thin, shallow or surface works shall be taken in square unit or in area ( M2).

➢Long and thin work shall be taken in linear or running unit (RMT)

➢Piece works or job works etc shall be taken as number.

Dr. Sudarshan D. Kore, NICMAR University, Pune 18

Units of Measurements
Categorized for their nature, shape, size and for making payments to
contractor.
1.Single units-----doors, windows, trusses etc., are expressed in numbers.

2.Work consisting linear measurement ------fencing,handrail,bands for specific

width etc., are expressed in running meters (RM)

3.Works consisting areal measurements-------------plastering, white washing,

etc., are expressed in square meters (m2).

4.Works consisting cubical contents which involve volume like earth work,
concreting, masonry, etc., are expressed in cubic meters(m3).
