"Investigating The Impact Of Technologies On Student Engagement :An Action

Research Study On Effective Strategies For Students Collaboration On Grade 8

Students At Victoria High School In The Academic Year 2024"

I. INTRODUCTION
Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives. Not a single day passes that we

do not witness at least one individual using a smartphone, tablet, or laptop computer. In recent

years, the widespread integration of technology in educational settings has brought about

significant changes in teaching and learning practices. Student engagement is a critical factor in

promoting effective learning outcomes. It encompasses students' active participation,

motivation, and involvement in the learning process. Hamilton-Hankins (2017) argued that

Student engagement is a wide-ranging and dynamic phenomenon with multidimensions and

had been studied in the context of using technology.

While technology offers numerous benefits, concerns have been raised about its potential

negative impact on student engagement. Numerous studies have explored the negative impact

of technologies on student engagement, shedding light on specific aspects that hinder students'

active participation and focus. For instance, research has indicated that excessive screen time

and digital distractions can reduce students' ability to concentrate, impacting their engagement

in learning activities.

In the Philippines, the Department of Education has implemented the K to 12 Basic Education

Curriculum, which includes Junior High. However, there is limited research about the impact of
technology on the student engagement. Therefore, this proposal aims to introduce an

intervention program to improve the student engagement without technology included with

the chosen Grade 8 students at Victoria High School in the academic year 2024. The program

will be based on previous research and make an effective strategy on student collaboration.

II. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The issue we're facing is to improve the student engagement of chosen Grade 8 students at

Victoria High School in the academic year 2024. Though technology has become an integral part

of modern education, offering numerous benefits such as access to information, interactive

learning experiences, and increased connectivity.

However, there is growing concern about the potential negative impact of technologies on

student engagement such as lack of attention, student interest, decreased social interaction,

reduced concentration and laziness. This problem statement aims to investigate the negative

impact of technologies on student engagement, shedding light on the challenges and potential

solutions in optimizing technology use in educational settings.

Furthermore , there is a pressing need to address this problem and implement effective

strategies to improve student engagement among Grade 8 students at Victoria High School in

the academic year 2024. It will benefit the students to achieve academic excellent.

III. INTERVENTION
The intervention activity of collecting gadgets during class hours aims to enhance student

engagement by minimizing distractions and promoting focused participation in the learning

process. By temporarily removing digital devices, this intervention encourages students to

actively engage with the classroom environment, interact with peers, and fully immerse

themselves in the educational experience.

The pervasive presence of gadgets and technology in classrooms can often lead to reduced

student engagement, increased distractions, and limited social interaction. By implementing the

intervention of collecting gadgets during class hours, educators seek to create a focused and

immersive learning environment that fosters active participation, deep thinking, and meaningful

interactions among students.

1. Assessment

Develop a routine for collecting gadgets at the beginning of the class and returning them

at the end. Clearly communicate the expectations and procedures to students, ensuring

a smooth process that minimizes disruptions to the learning environment.

2. Practice

Employ instructional strategies that foster active participation and collaboration among

students. Incorporate group discussions, hands-on activities, debates, fun-based

learning, and other interactive techniques that promote engagement and critical

thinking.

3. Assessment

Regularly reflect on the effectiveness of the gadget collection intervention. Gather

feedback from students regarding their engagement levels, distractions experienced,

and the overall impact on their learning experience. Adjust the intervention as necessary

based on the feedback received.
