V. PROCEDURES TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY

Good morning class! Good morning ma’am!

How are you today? (students will response)

Are you excited to learn again? Yes Ma’am!

I do believe that God is the

ultimate provider of
knowledge, so let us ask first
His guidance, so we all can
learn again.

(Teacher will call a student to (called student will lead)

lead the prayer)

Thank you very much for

leading the prayer.

You may now take your seats.

Are all my students present Yes, Ma’am!

today?

I’m so pleased that all of you are

present today. It is just a manifestation
that all of you are interested to learn.

Am I right class? Yes, Ma’am!

‘’Align your chairs’’

Show me that you are ready,

sit properly and listen attentively.

Before we proceed, let us have

first recap of our past lesson.

Who among you can still r

A. Reviewing previous lesson or remember our past lesson?
presenting the new lesson.
Our past lesson was all about
What is it all about? the “Properties of a Well
Written Text”

Very good! Yesterday we

tackled about the different
properties of a well written text
such as organization,
coherence and cohesion,
language use and mechanics.

B. Establishing a purpose for the

lesson.
C. Presenting examples/ instances
of the new lesson In this lesson, we will be
dealing with these following
objectives:
 . Identifies claims explicitly or
implicitly made in a written text;

 Differentiate the claims of fact,

claims of policy, and the claims of value
from each other; and

 Construct sentences using the

different types of claims based on the
given social issues.

I will give you two sentences

that talk about something
romantic to start our lesson.

Who can read the following (student will read)

sentences? 1.Every night I always think
and dream about you.
2 .I love you so much.

Which sentences do you prefer? (student will answer)

Is it 1 or 2?

Well, for some, do you think sentence

1 means almost the same as I love
you?

Some people direct or indirectly

expressed their feelings. They don’t
say I love you but the way they say or
do imply that they love the person.

This is the difference between implicit

and explicit information. In critical
reading , you need to distinguish the
information.

D. Discussing new concepts and An explicit claim is directly and

practicing new skills #1 clearly stated in the text.

(it is when you can easily point out the

information in the passage.)

Meanwhile, an implicit claim is

indirectly expressed in the text.

(and you need to look for clue or make

inferences to understand its meaning).

Let’s take a look at a sample text.

Kindly read the written text (all students will read)

altogether.
SAMPLE TEXT:

“ Congratulations,
Rosie! Your parents must
be proud of you.” The
teacher greeted her with
delight. It was graduation
day and Rosie managed to
stand on stage and
delivered her speech in

celebrate her success.
Rosie left the stage
with tears in her eyes as
the clicking of the medals
could be heard from afar.

As she approached
her parents, they kissed
her and gave her a big hug
and uttered. “ We love
you, dear! Your success is
our success. We will
surely celebrate at home.”

(students will answer)

Now, let’s identify the above
statements if it is implicit or
explicit information.

None, ma’am
Excellent! Do you have any
questions or clarifications ?

Okay so now let’s proceed to

the 3 types of claim but let us
first define the claim.
(student will answer)

So what is Claim?
Do you have any idea class?

Correct! You have an idea.

Claim is the central idea, what

the writers tries to prove in the
text by providing details,
explanations, and other types
of evidence. It is a sentence
that summarizes the most
important thing that the writer
wants to say as a result of
his/her thinking, reading, or
writing

E. Discussing new concepts and There have three types of claims in

practicing new skills #2 written texts.

One of which is a claim of fact. This

claim is a statement that reports,
describe predicts, make causal claims.
 It asserts that something has
existed, exists, or will exist based
on the data.
 It relies on reliable sources or
systematic procedure to be
validated through science or
history.
(Claim of fact is an argument
that based on reality.) it
considers time (past, present
and future.)
It talk about what is and what
is not. They say the certain
condition exist.

To help you thoroughly identify claim

of facts, here are some of the
determining questions :
 Did it happen?
 Does it exist ?
 It is true ?
 How can its truthfulness verified?

Examples :
1. The atmosphere has too much
carbon dioxide.
2. Global warming is a threat to all
mankind. (student will give an example)

Who can give their own

example for a claim of fact?

Very good!

On the other hand, claim of

policy is a specific statement
on procedures or laws that
need to be modified based on
certain issues or conditions. It
suggests that specific actions
should be done or chosen as
solution to a particular
problem.

The following are the determining

questions for evaluating claim of
policy:
 Does the claim suggest a specific
remedy to solve the problem?
 Is the policy clearly defined?
 Is the policy the best one? For
Whom? According to whose
standard?
 What would be the possible
benefits?

Examples :
1. A dress code should be introduced
for all students.
2. National ID system must be
implemented in the Philippines for
better general transactions. (student will answer)

Who can give another example

?

Very good!

Let’s tackle the last type of

claim. (called student will read)

(the teacher will call a student Claim of value

to read )  is made based on morality,
belief, ethics, or
philosophy.
 Also based on likes or
dislikes, good or bad.
 Usually compares 2 ideas
against one another.

Okay so these are the following

determining questions for evaluating
claim of value:

 Does it appeal to your

judgment?
 Is it right or wrong?
 Which one is bad or good?
 Which one is more important,
and why?
 Whose standards are used?

Examples :
1. Security is more important than
privacy.
2. Fake news is not worth of our
attention. (students will give
examples)
Again, who can give another example
for a claim of value?
Yes ma’am

Did you understand the types of

claims that we have been discussed?
F. Developing mastery Okay class, now I will group you into (The students will group
three groups. Please count off 1-3, themselves into three)
and go to your respective groups.
Choose your leader and come in front
to pick a topic.

Directions : Each group will pick a (students will do the activity)

certain social issue and construct 1
sentence of each type of claim ( Fact,
Policy, & Value ) based on the
assigned social issue. ( Teenage
Pregnancy, Cyberbullying, Social
Media Addiction)

I will give you 10 minutes to do this

activity. Yes, ma’am

Is it clear class?

(each group will present

Okay class times up,each group their work)
choose your volunteer and read the
statement you have formulated using
each type of claim in front of your
classmates.
(students will follow)

Class let’s give Aling Dionisia clap

for group 1.

For the group 2, let’s give them

Amazing clap!

And give Fantastic clap for the group

3.
G. Finding practical applications So class, by knowing the claims and (students will answer)
of concepts and skills in daily its type, how is it important to you in
living. your daily life as a reader and as
writer ?

on what ?
