THE TINMAN PROJECT


TASK:

Your job is to create a tin man that can sit or stand on its own using various
recycled objects. Your tin man MUST have two arms, two legs, a body, a head
and a hat.

The maximum height of your tin man is 2ft tall.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:
● Toilet Paper Rolls/Paper Towel Rolls
● Boxes of various sizes (e.g., cereal or shoe box)
● Aluminum foil
● Scissors
● Tape
● Measuring Tape (not a ruler)

METHOD: To be completed at home


1. Firstly, choose the following 3D shapes to create different parts of the Tin Man’s
body.
o Cube
o Cuboid
o Triangular Prism
o Cylinder

2. Design a sketch of your tin man in the box below.

3. Measure the dimensions of each body part and note them down in the following table:

*Do not forget to label spots that will end up not being seen! For example, you might not see the part
where your legs attach to the body (This means you will subtract spots that will not be covered by foil).

5. Attach all the various body parts with tape or hot glue.
6. Test your tin man model. It must be sitting without or with partial support.
7. Wrap it in aluminum foil using the surface area calculated above.
8. Write a reflection of at least five sentences on how this project helps connect maths
to real life.
