11
BASIC SALON SANITATION

The salon is a potentially dangerous place because of the tools and products we use
and the nature of the treatments. It is very important that everyone who works in the salon is
aware of possible safety risks and how to maintain safety for themselves, clients and co-
workers. This topic covers the safety duties and responsibilities for everyone in the salon.
Every employee and employer is required, by law, to behave safely and responsibly.

1. Nail technicians should always clean both their hands and their clients’ hands or feet
before every service. Some states allow the use of waterless hand sanitizers, but if
hand are dirty or contaminated, they should be washed with liquid soap and running
water first. Cleaning hands reduces the risk of spreading germs from client to client.
2. All implements (including individual implements that client brings in or that are
left in the salon), equipment, and, materials that come in contact with a client
must be properly cleaned (sanitized) and disinfected prior to servicing each
client. Before any tool or file can be used on a client, it must be properly cleaned
and disinfected.
3. If any metal tool or hand piece of equipment has come into contact with blood, body
fluid, infection, or an unhealthy condition, it must immediate be cleaned and disinfected
(rather than continuing to use it on the same client). If a nail file or other porous item.
Comes into contact with blood, it must be disposed of immediately. (There may be
local, state, or federal regulations regarding items that come into contact with blood.)
4. Store clean and disinfected tools in a clean container or lined drawer (labeled
“disinfected”) that is separate from soiled or used tools and files (so you never get
confused and pick up a dirty implemented).
5. Cleaning to remove all visible residue or debris. Proper cleaning is the first step in
safety, but it must followed by disinfection, which involves describes the use of
chemicals to destroy germs on non-living surfaces. Salon disinfectants include EPA-
registered, hospital-level, liquid disinfectants products that are virucidal, bactericidal,
and fungicidal; that are 10% bleach; or that are 70% or higher isopropyl or ethyl
alcohol.
6. Use clean towels and/or manicure mats for each client.
7. Products such as cream, lotion, scrubs, paraffin wax, masks, and oils must always be
used in a sanitary manner that prevents contamination. For example, paraffin and nail
oils should not be applied with a brush (or spatula) that has touched the skin. To avoid
product contamination:
a. Dispose of used or remaining product between clients.
b. Use single-use disposable implements to remove products from container for
application or remove product with a clean, disinfected spatula and put product
into a disposable service cup.
c. Use an application bottle or dropper to apply the product.
8. If blood or body fluid comes in contact with any salon surface, the nail professional
should put on protective, disposable gloves and clean it with an EPA-registered,
hospital liquid disinfectant or a 10% bleach solution. In case of an accidental cut, clean
with an antiseptic and bandage the cut.

12
PROCEDURE ON HOW TO STERILIZE NAIL AND OTHER TOOLS IN A SALON

ALWAYS USE THE To prevent the spread of bacteria, use the right nail and
APPROPRIATE SALON barbering tools depending on the product you’re using. Be
AND COSMETOLOGY aware of the proper application techniques for creams,
TOOLS lotions, scrubs, waxes, and oils. For example, nail oil
should be applied with a brush or spatula that has not
touched the skin.
CLEAN, DISINFECT, AND • First, clean off any debris and residue.
STERILIZE REUSABLE Follow the appropriate cleaning method depending on the
SALON TOOLS material.
For example, use a scrub brush to clean abrasive files,
buffers, and paddies. Whereas, an acetone soak is the
better option for metal electric file bits.
•Second, fully immerse tools with EPA approved
disinfectant and let them air dry before your next use..

SALON CLEANING There a few different salon cleaning supplies you should
SUPPLIES LIKE always have available.
BARBICIDE • Disinfectant solutions from companies like Barbicide are
popular. Use them to clean and sterilize nail tools and
other equipment.
• Disinfectant wipes or sterilization pouches also come in
handy, as they are easy to apply and use.
• Dry sanitizers or sterilizers are great places to store your
clean tools.
• Comb and brush cleaners are necessary in salons.
These extend the life of your brushes.
• Generic floor cleaners keep your salon in tip-top shape.
THROW OUT If a product is labelled disposable or for single use only, be
DISPOSABLE SALON sure to throw it out after use. Do not attempt to clean or
ITEMS reused it on multiple clients. For example, cotton balls,
wooden applicators, toe separators, and many nail files
and buffers are only meant to be used one time.
KEEP YOUR SALON Be sure that everything is in its proper place. Cords for
WORKSPACE SAFE AND curling irons and electric razors should be well organized

towels, sheets, and robes in 160 degree water for at least
25 minutes. Foot basins can be a breeding ground for
bacteria, so be sure to clean and disinfect the jets and
basin thoroughly after client.

13
HOW CAN TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT BE KEPT SAFE, CLEAN AND FUNCTIONAL?

It is vital to sterilize metal implements, sanitized wooden tools, disinfect hand and foot spa
machines as well as environmental surfaces before and after each use. Contaminated tools
can cause bacterial and fungal infections that are unsightly, painful and sometimes, fatal.
There are several methods of cleaning and sterilization. Do a cursory cleaning after eache nail
care service and deep-clean monthly to keep tools safe and useful all the time.

1. Sterilize metal implements after each use in a hospital-grade disinfectant that is

bactericidal, virucidal, and fungicidal. This disinfectant can be found in beauty supply
stores. Immerse the tools in the disinfectant for 10 minutes.
2. Disinfect foot basins after each use with a bleach with 10 parts water. Using gloves,
rinse the basin with the solution to disinfect. If necessary, scrub with a detergent to
remove any dirt or debris.
3. Use a boiling method of sterilization once a month to disinfect all metal implements.
Designate one pot for sterilization to prevent cross-contamination with food. Submerge
the tools in boiling water for 10 minutes. Drain the tools and allow them to dry.
4. Store sterilized metal implements in an airtight, zipper-sealed bag to keep them from
being exposed to dirt and bacteria. Be sure tools are completely dry before storing
them. If waiting more than a couple of weeks before the next nail care service, sterilize
the tools again before use.
5. Inspect tools and equipment regularly to identify defective ones for repair, replacement
or condemnation.

KEEPING THE WORKPLACE CLEAN AND SAFE

1. Beauty salons must be well-lighted and well-ventilated and must be in good

sanitary condition.
2. The salon premises must be free from rodents, vermin, flies or other similar insects.
3. All salon establishments must be provided with continuous running hot and cold
water.
4. The curtains and floor coverings in the salon must be washable and kept clean.
5. All hair, used cotton or other waste materials must be removed from the floor
immediately, and deposited in a closed container. Get rid of them from the salon
premises at frequent intervals.
6. The rest rooms must be well-sanitized and be provided with individual towels.
7. Each beautician must wear a washable uniform while working on clients.
8. Each client must be provided with a freshly laundered towel.
9. All waste materials should be disposed of in an enclosed waste bin fitted with
polythene bin liner, durable enough to resist tearing.

14

c. Saturate a cleaning cloth with disinfectant solution and wipe entire surface area of
equipment.
d. Wipe the surface with paper towel to dry it.
