The student will be able to:

 define ecological literacy; (this chapter will give you a concept of ecological literacy

where you can acquire knowledge on how this literacy will be a benefit for your

journey as a future educator)

 distinguish among environmental literacy, eco-literacy, and ecological literacy;

(distinguish, we will point out the difference of these three-term, how they are

connected to each other)

 describe an eco-literate person; and (are you one of them, or do you have these

characteristics? We’ll know about this later on)

 recognize individual and collective roles in protecting and rehabilitating the environment

and ecosystem. (recognize individual means we as an individual, lahat tayo, hindi

lang ang mga pantitot plantita, so lahat tayo, we play a major role in protecting and

rehabilitating the environment, we need to save our nature and also the ecosystem)

"The development of ecological understanding is not simply another subject to be learned but a

fundamental change in the way we see the world." --John Lyle, 1994

(so, in this quotation according John Lyle, 1994 he quoted the development of ecological

understanding is not simply another subject to be learned but a fundamental change in the way

we see the world, when we say fundamental it is necessary, kumbaga sa bahay dapat ito yung

development, bakit our?

pa rin ng knowledge.. so it will always the fundamental on how we see the change of the world.)

 We are now at a critical point with many environmental issues such as climate change

and rampant environmental destruction.

atmosphere, it caused by excess greenhouse gases, si greenhouse gases sila yung nag

aabsorb ng init papalabas sa ating mundo.)

 Ecological literacy is important to business and political leaders, and to all levels of

education. (business, bakit? Kasi kailangan din nilang iconsider lahat most especially

How about political leaders why do you think that they also

need to become an ecological literacy? Dahil sa kanilang mga projects like

infrastructure na kanilang pinapagawa so kailangan na they will know within

reconstruct, at dahil sila din ay leaders so they need to be.. for them to become

concerned and well informed.. and also to all level of education, so from Kinder to

College, kailangan talaga na we are awake about what is happening around us, and

we need to have knowledge and vigilance noh, kasi hindi lang dapat natin siya pinag

aaralan kundi ginagawa din natin at naiaapply din natin siya into our daily life..

that’s why included din po sa 21 st century literacies ang ecological literacy for us to

become more aware especially us, you as a future educator kasi it will give us power

to influence the outcomes, syempre hindi lang tayo kailangan magbase sa mga

nadidiscuss natin, may follow up din dapat, ok so ineencourage ko kayong sumali or

umattend ng mga seminars to do something in addition to what you have already

done, in order for you to achieve your aim so kailangan din na hindi lang basta

nakukuntento si teacher kung ano yung mga alam niya, be teachable always, never

stop learning, seek always knowledge and be a lifelong learner.)

 Ecological literacy refers to an individual's understanding not only of ecological

concepts, but also of his or her place in the ecosystem. (Meena & Alison, 2009) (given

na yung alam natin yung concept, naiintindihan na natin, so after knowing we must

do something, that will change our world. It will always start with us. His or her

place in the ecosystem, ecosystem is the living things and non-living things. So tayo

Ecological Literacy
Therefore, identifying school students' ecological literacy levels is a necessary step to investigate

their behavior, attitudes, sensitivity, and behavioral intention. In order to create awareness

among students, it is important to foster correct knowledge to ensure a positive approach to the

environment.

investigate their behavior, attitudes, sensitivity, and behavioral intention. So this kind of

behavior attitudes and sensitivity will enable us to apply what have we learn, kung anuman

nakakasama, are we preserving sustainable environment for future generations. Just like that.

In order to create awareness among students, it is important to foster correct knowledge to

ensure a positive approach to the environment. (we need to have this instinctive awareness to

care and magkaroon tayo ng empathy sa ating environment. Foster correct knowledge for this

abilities that we have so that we will be able to protect and preserve the environment. So

remember that your children, or young children are great imitators, so lahat ng nakikita nila

ring malaking impact sa kanilang magiging character in the future.)

Kayhyaoglu (2009) also stated that positive attitudes and values toward the environment are

occurred with knowledge.

Developing environmentally responsible behavior requires correct knowledge about climate

change, the cause of global warming, carbon emissions, and carbon footprint. (Kuo & Chen,

2009) (what are carbon emissions? According to National Geographic--Greenhouse gases have

far-ranging environmental and health effects. They cause climate change by trapping heat,

and they also contribute to respiratory disease from smog and air pollution. Extreme weather,

food supply disruptions, and increased wildfires are other effects of climate change caused by

greenhouse gases. And carbon footprint according to impactful ninja-- Our carbon footprint

has a negative impact on the environment in multiple ways: It is the main cause of human-

induced climate change, it contributes to urban air pollution, it leads to toxic acid rain, it adds

to coastal and ocean acidification, and it worsens the melting of glaciers and polar ice.)

Ecological Literacy

Ecological Literacy is meant to enable conscious and participant citizens to make informed

decisions or take action on environmental issues (Jordan et al. 2009) (Project learning din ito

pagkakaroon ng critical thinking skills para maging independent learner sila, that will affect on

how they apply the decision-making and take action on environmental issues, it is also

included in human relation to environment dahil included din ito ngayong 21 st century.)

Characterizing and ecoliterate person

Dr. Tom Puk (2002) of Lakehead University characterized an ecologically literate person of the

21st century as "the responsible, lifelong learner who strives to improve the human condition

and the environment within the context of self, human groups, the biosphere, and the

ecosphere." (so if you are this kind of person, you will also find a purpose and meaning in life,
to the point na hindi ka titigil na maghangad pa para ma achieve mo yung growth, balance

growth holistically.

intellectual skills,or what we call the (Knowledge) hindi lang din sa Affective: growth in

feelings or emotion areas (Attitude) hindi lang si Psychomotor: manual or physical skills (Skills)

included din ang pagiging reflective, intuitive, aesthetic, social, creative and spiritual

capabilities. If you pursue this kind of qualities, therefore it will have a great impact in our life.

The ecologically literate person in order to achieve the aforementioned ultimate goal should

become:

1. An inquirer—so the basic skills and knowledge here were knowledge of the

relationships found within the ecosphere, among the components of solar energy, the

air, water, soil, rocks, flora and fauna, people, animals and all other organisms and

components, both biotic and abiotic. So lahat ng all knowledge that we acquire, the

skills that we trained in a particular task, it will empower us, para maachieve natin

yung ating full potential, so ang role mo as a future teacher paano mo yung maiaapply

yung kanilang full potential and know their place as well as their relationship to

natural environment. From the word itself inquirer, seeking to learn about something.

2. reflective learner – as a reflective learner how can your reflect by understanding the

value and limitations of human knowledge, limitation, na kahit anong talino mo you

will meet someone who is smarter than you and you can’t prevent that, kaya be

teachable always, be a lifelong learner, limitations of human knowledge again na sa

mga actions ay nagiging destructive na sa ating environment, so what are the things
that you need to do to reflect on this. The power and limitations of the natural world,

kalikasan, kasi you can’t predict, meron at meron pa ring limitations ang mga dapat

powerful and uncontrollable. And the role of self as it is manifested in one’s personal

narrative. The role of self, you as a reflective learner your manifestation in your

practice will define your role in the environment.

3. Intelligently self-directed – engage in self-appraisal meaning your assessment in your

own work, your own evaluation to your own performance, bakit? Kasi kailangan na

ineevaluate mo din ang performance mo to the point na at the end, if you see the

result of your actions you examine ano pa kaya ang naging kulang? Is it already

enough? Tama ba? Or mali? Ito bang ginawa ko nakabuti ba sa environement, just like

that. Sets new learning objectives, na if you achieve your set objectives, you need to

look forward for what’s next? What am I going to do next. Learning objective meaning

involved na naman dito si knowledge, intellectual abilities, for you to be able to learn

you need to adopt change, why? Because change is a proof of learning. Develops plan

to achieve those objectives, so ano ba ang dapat mong gawin para ma achieve mo

itong sinet mong objectives na ito, what are your strategies to achieve this. How can

you cooperate with the plans you developed? Carries out those plans in a flexible

inquiry-directed manner, so these would be your actions. Kailangan flexible inquiry-

gawin mo, or you with yourself, you find something or you search for something to

make it more effective, bakit kailangan flexible manner kasi kailangan marami kang

ways, or paraan, or choices, hindi lang isa at kuntento ka na don, so hindi po ganon,
okay. And reflects on the whole process, so habang on process pa lang including your

plans, kailangan na nagrereflect ka na din for your growth and development.

4. Morally responsible – according to the oxford dictionary. Moral concerns with the

principles of right and wrong behavior and the goodness or badness of human

character. And responsible is having an obligation to do something, or having control

over or care for someone, as part of one's job or role. (sabi dito sa definition according

to my sources, morally responsible is the one who governs actions with percepts

(responsibility, seeking justice and equality for all) that maintain harmonious

relationships; ---meaning these are the maintenance and growth, dahil pag sinabing

harmonious—consistent, saan? Consistent sa relationship with the environment, yan

so lahat yan will give meaning in our life. when we say percepts naman according to

your dictionary from the internet -- A recognizable sensation or impression received

by the mind through the senses, something that is perceived, may example tayo dito

responsibility, responsibility for what? Responsibility for helping others, in a right way,

seeking justice and equality for all, that is also an example of moral, seeking justice,

from the word itself justice, which doing the right thing will get the rewards and doing

the wrong thing will receive a punishment. Performing legitimately assigned roles to

the best of one's ability, and living in harmony with other people and with nature.

5. Ecologically responsible – who embodies ecological ideals in daily life; --in the most

competent and informed manner, kasi kung ikaw ay incompetent, and not informed

how are you going to take it into action? For becoming an ecologically responsible. So

dapat kumpleto included your natural capabilities.

6. Seek self-transcendence -- who moves beyond the limitations of personal ego by

identifying with human groups (past and future), flora and fauna, ecosphere, that
transcend the individual life in scope and time. (so for our better understanding,

transcendence is the act of rising above something to a superior state. The self and

relating to that which is greater than the self. In simpler terms, it is the realization that

you are one small part of a greater whole, and acting accordingly. Kung babalikan

natin si PED1, we will relate this self-transcendence in self-actualization. Always seek

for the highest part of yourself, the highest level. Ecological principles are basic

assumptions (or beliefs) about ecosystems and how they function that are informed

by the ecological concepts. Flora refers to all plant life and fauna refers to all animal

life. Fauna cannot prepare their own food so they depend upon the flora for their

food. The ecosphere is the biosphere of the earth or another planet, especially when

the interaction between the living and nonliving components is emphasized. So this

will be helpful for you to transcend yourself/ or the other individual life in scope and

time.

 The ecologically literate person of the 21st century has a positive view of life, grounded in the

faith of interconnectedness, and has the capacity to competently perform significant life work

and related tasks and responsibilities. (positive view of life, na kailangan natin tong i-set

palagi sa ating mindset, if you think of positive thoughts, therefore the result will be positive

also. Grounded in the faith of interconnectedness, if you’re ecologically literate person you

also connect yourself in the environment, for you will be having this capacity to competently

perform significant life work and related tasks and responsibilities.)

 Such as view enables her to look upon the human experience positively and all living things

compassionately. (human experience positively and compassionately, to the point na lahat ng

experiences mo iisipin mo na para sa growth mo ito, you are willing to do whatever it may

panahon.

 Environmental Literacy -- an individual’s understanding, skills and motivation to make

responsible decisions that considers his or her relationships to natural systems, communities

and future generations. (so this is a self-explanatory only)

 The National Science Foundation’s Advisory Committee for Environmental Research and

Education noted that:

 “Creating a scientifically informed citizenry requires a concerted, systematic approach to

environmental education.” (since science play a vital role in our daily life, it has a benefit for

us, sa bahay, sa work, sa company, sa labas. Okay so scientifically informed citizenry, so dapat

you have sufficient knowledge also about science, what it’s purpose, importance and how it

benefits us. For us to better informed, and yung mga possible na decisions na pwedeng nating

gawin with this kind of knowledge. And a systematic approach to environmental education, so

sa education when we say approach ito yung ating way into teaching and learning process,

kung ano yung methods na gagawin mo para maiapply mo yung approach mo, later on we will

be having specifically approach and strategies on how the children learn, or how can you

apply the way of your teaching in knowledge sa mga estudyante mo, using this kind of

approach.

 Environmental Literacy -- encompasses experiences, understanding and action. While

knowledge and understanding are important components of environmentally literate citizens,

the key is connecting what we know and what we do. (encompasses experience, dito papasok

yung skills, understanding and action, so kung mapapansin niyo lagging may action na

very applicable kasi talaga yung learning by doing ni John Dewey, kasi very critical po ang

ginagawa nila sa classrooms, sa school, may malaking impact that will lead them understand

especially this kind of topic, for them to appreciate the components of being environmentally

literate in order for them to grow with the connection of nature, sabi dito this is the key for

what we know and what we do, therefore you are willing to take this into action for

improvement, concerning the environment, the society, and the whole world.)

Those who are environmentally literate possess, to varying degrees:

 the knowledge and understanding of a wide range of environmental concepts, problems,

and issues;
 a set of cognitive and affective dispositions;
 a set of cognitive skills and abilities; and
 the appropriate behavioral strategies to apply such knowledge and understanding in order
to make sound and effective decisions in a range of environmental contexts.”
