ACTIVITY SHEETS IN GENERAL CHEMISTRY 2

Learning Competency: Describe how various factors influence the rate of a reaction
LECTURE:
Chemical Kinetics is the study of rates of chemical processes that includes reaction mechanisms and how different factors affects it.
Many chemical reactions occur in the surroundings. Some of these reactions take place at fast or slow rate. When baking soda
is mixed with vinegar it reacts spontaneously at fast rate with bubble formation. However, rusting of iron took a long time to happen.
The rate of reaction is a change in amount or concentration of a substance (reactant or product) per unit time.
ACTIVITY 2
A. Directions: Complete the following table by indicating whether each of the following scenarios would either INCREASE or
DECREASE the rate of reaction.

Scenario Increase or Decrease

1. Breaking down a reactant into smaller pieces

2. Increasing the concentration of solution

3. Decreasing the surface area

4. Adding heat

5. Removing heat

6. Adding a catalyst

7. Diluting a solution

8. Removing an enzyme

9. Increasing temperature

10. Decreasing temperature

B. Directions: Complete the table by indicating which factor would have the greatest impact on the rate of reaction. Choose from
CONCENTRATION, TEMPERATURE, SURFACE AREA or CATALYST.

Scenario Factors (CONCENTRATION, TEMPERATURE,

SURFACE AREA or CATALYST)

1. Blowing air on a campfire to help get it long going.

2. Raw potato are cut into thin slices for cooking.

3. A Mammoth is found perfectly preserved in near the Arctic

circle.

4. Protein is broken down in the stomach by the enzyme pepsin.

5. A dust explosion occurs in a saw mill.
