Factors Affecting
the Rate of
Chemical Reaction
Jens Martensson 16
Objectives:
1. Describe how various factors
influence the rate of a reaction.
2. Perform simple laboratory
experiments showing the different
factors that influence the rate of a
reaction.
3. Value the importance of learning
about the various factors affecting
the rate of a reaction to
consumption of medicine.

Jens Martensson 17
1. Particle Size/Surface Area
•A measure of the
total area that the surface of
the object occupies.

Jens Martensson 18
2. Temperature
•A physical quantity that
expresses hotness and
coldness.
Jens Martensson 19
3. Catalyst
•It speeds up chemical reaction
without being consumed by the
reaction.
•Enzymes are naturally
occurring catalysts.
Jens Martensson 20
4. Concentration of reactants

•The abundance of solute

particles in a solution.

Jens Martensson 21
Particle Size/Surface Area
• The smaller the particles, the faster is the
rate of reaction.
• Decreasing particle size or increasing
surface area results to faster reaction rate.
• An increase in surface area relates to more
particles being available for collision.

Jens Martensson 23
Temperature
• The higher the temperature, the faster is the
rate of reaction.
• Increasing the temperature of the reactants
increases the kinetic energy that it
possesses, thereby increasing the number of
collisions and giving enough energy to
overcome the activation energy.

Jens Martensson 24
Catalyst
•The presence of a
catalyst speeds up the
rate of reaction.
Jens Martensson 25
Concentration of reactants
•The higher the concentration, the greater
and the faster is the rate of reaction.
•An increase in reactant concentration
ensures that there will be more collisions
between particles.

Jens Martensson 26
Activity 2
A. Identify whether each of the following scenarios would either INCREASE
or DECREASE the rate of reaction.
Scenario Increase or Decrease
1. Breaking down a reactant into smaller pieces
2. Increasing the concentration of solution
3. Decreasing the surface area
4. Adding heat
5. Removing heat
6. Adding a catalyst
7. Diluting a solution
8. Removing an enzyme
9. Increasing temperature
10. Decreasing temperature

Jens Martensson 27
Activity 2
B. Directions: Complete the table by indicating which factor would have the greatest impact on the rate of
reaction. Choose from CONCENTRATION, TEMPERATURE, SURFACE AREA or CATALYST.
Scenario Factors (CONCENTRATION, TEMPERATURE,
SURFACE AREA or CATALYST)

1. Blowing air on a campfire to help get

it long going.
2. Raw potato are cut into thin slices
for cooking.
3. A Mammoth is found perfectly
preserved in near the Arctic circle.
4. Protein is broken down in the
stomach by the enzyme pepsin.
5. A dust explosion occurs in a saw
mill.

How will you relate
the importance of
learning about the
different factors
affecting the rate of
a reaction to
consumption of
medicine?
Jens Martensson 29
What have you
learned from today’s
discussion?
Jens Martensson 30
