Guideline for Online Qualifying Examination (Summer 2021)

The guidelines for online qualifying examination are as follows:

1. All students will take the qualifying examination through Zoom platform. Throughout the
exam period, students must turn on the camera to broadcast yourselves and the
surroundings to the exam proctor. If any student misses to broadcast him/herself during
the examination, the department may consider the examination to be null and voided.
2. The answers must be written on A4 papers. Typing and texting on any device during
the examination are not allowed unless it is for communicating with the proctor or you
get a clear permission from the proctor to do so.
3. Before the examination period, all students will receive the examination documents
through Zoom, including the problems for 6 subjects. You can choose to take the exam
up to 3 subjects. And you must inform the exam proctor for which subjects you want to
take BEFORE you start working on the exam problems.
4. All students have 1 hour for each subject and must submit the answers at the end of
every hour before moving on to the next subject. The answers from the A4 sheets must
be captured in PDF or image formats and submit to pautchar@gmail.com. (Note: 5 minutes
gracing period is allowed for the answer submission.) The proctor may randomly asks some
students to show his or her answer sheet via the broadcasting camera during the
examination.
5. The format of the submitted file is
Problem1 Student ID a i.e. Problem1 630093421 a (a is first page.)
Problem1 Student ID b i.e. Problem1 630093421 b (b is second page.)
Problem2 Student ID a
Etc.
6. Should you need any assistance during the exam, please communicate with the proctor
using Zoom chat. Please give others courtesy by not making any noise during the
examination.
Time Activities
08.00 am - 08.30 am All students report yourselves via Zoom. Check your
broadcasting equipment (Video and Audio Systems).
08.30 am - 08.40 am The proctor will distribute the problems from all 6 subjects to
you via Zoom Chat.
08.40 am - 08.55 am Each student informs the proctor of his/her 3 selected subjects
via private Zoom chat to the proctor.
08.55 am - 09.00 am The proctor will explain guideline, rules & regulations, of the
exam and how to submit your answers.
09.00 am - 12.15 am  Start working on your exam.

 Time period for each subject is 1 hour. (100 points / subject).

 Write your answer on separate A4 papers by hand (No typing)

 After the time is over, all students must submit your answers

by taking clear pictures of your answers and email them to the

Email : pautchar@gmail.com within 5 minutes after the end of
exam time of each subject.

Transport Phenomena

A solid sphere of benzoic acid (A) is immersed in completely stagnant water (B). The benzoic acid is
only slightly soluble in water and is dissolving at such a slow rate that the diameter (dp) remains
approximately constant. If the equilibrium exists at the solid-liquid interface such that the
concentration of the aqueous solution immediately adjacent to the surface is maintained at a
constant concentration of benzoic acid = CAO

(a) Derive an expression for the differential equation in terms of CA in the stagnant liquid film around
a solid sphere of benzoic acid and identify necessary boundary condition(s). (40 points)

(b) Solve the differential equation in (a) to get the concentration profile of CA in the stagnant liquid
film around a solid sphere. (40 points)

(c) What is the molar flux of A at the sphere surface? (20 points)
