Illustrative Examples:
1. Breaking Strength of Hollow Blocks
A hollow blocks maker has developed a new ratio of materials that he claims has a mean breaking
strength of 15 kilograms with a standard deviation of 0.5 kilogram. Test the hypothesis that μ=15 kilograms
against the alternative hypothesis that μ ≠15 kilogram if a random sample of 40 hollow blocks are tested
and found to have a mean breaking strength of 14.8 kilograms. Use a 0.01 level of significance.
Solution:
a). H 0 : μ=15 kg
b). H 1 : μ ≠15 kg
c). Level of Significance:α =0.01
d). Critical Region: z α/ 2 ←2.58 and z α/ 2 >2.58
(To find the critical region, identify the level of significance and the alternative hypothesis if it is two-
tailed, left-tailed or right-tailed. In the first example since it is two-tailed, we divide the level of significance α
by 2 that will give us 0.005, so the z α/ 2=± 2.58)
e). Test Statistic: x=14.8 , μ0=15 , σ =0.5∧n=40
x−μ0 14.8−15 −0.2 −0.2
z= = = = =−2.50
σ 0.5/ √ 40 0.5 0.08
√n 6.32
f). Decision: Accept the H 0. Therefore, there is no enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis.
(Since −2.50>−2.58 and do not lie on the critical region, the null hypothesis is accepted)
2. Mean Life Expectancy of Wall Clock Battery
A manufacturer of a certain wall clock claims that the mean life expectancy of the battery of the
clock is 48 months. A researcher wants to validate this claim so he chose a sample of 60 clocks and noted
that their mean life expectancy is 45 months with a standard deviation of 12 months. At α =0.10 , can you
conclude that the mean life expectancy is less than 48 months?
Solution:
a). H 0 : μ=48 months
b). H 1 : μ< 48 months
c). Level of Significance:α =0.10
d). Critical Region: z ←1.28
(To find the critical region, identify the level of significance and the alternative hypothesis if it is two-
tailed, left-tailed or right-tailed. In the second example since it is left – tailed, identify the z-value for one
tailed using α =0.10 and that is z ←1.28)
e). Test Statistic: x=45 , μ 0=48 , σ =12∧n=60
x−μ0 45−48 −3 −3
z= = = = =−1.94
σ 12/ √ 60 12 1.55
√n 7.75
f). Decision: Reject the H 0. Therefore, the mean life expectancy of the battery of the clock is less than 48
months.
(Since −1.94 ←1.28 and it lies on the critical region, the null hypothesis is rejected)

ENGAGE
Directions: Solve the problem below. Write your answer in your notebook and check your answers
with the answer key at the end of the activity sheets.
A random sample of 100 recorded deaths in the Philippines during the past year showed an
average life span of 71.8 years, with a standard deviation of 8.9 years. Does this seem to indicate that the
average life span today is greater than 70 years? Use a 0.05 level of significance.

Assessment
DIRECTION: Answer the following. Write your answer on a yellow paper.
A. Choose the letter of the correct answer. Refer to the problem below. (1 point each)
The manufacturer of a particular brand of peanut butter claims that the mean fat content per serving of
peanut butter is 15 grams with a standard deviation of 1.8 gram. A dietician wants to verify this statement
so he collects 80 servings and noted their fat contents. He determined that the mean fat content of the
samples is 15.6 gram. Is the fat content per serving of peanut butter significantly different from what the
manufacturer stated? Use a 0.01 level of significance.
1. What is the alternative hypothesis? A. μ ≠15.6 B. μ>15.6 C. μ ≠15 D. μ<15
2. Which of the following is the value of α ? A. α =0.005 Bα =0.01 C. α =1.8 D. α =15
3. What is/are the critical region/s?
A. z ←2.58 B. z ←2.33 C. z >2.58 D. z ←2.58∧z >2.58
4. Which of the following is the computed z-value?
A. z=2.98 B. z=0.54 C. z=−0.54 D. z=−2.98
5. Which is the best decision for the given problem?
A. Accept the null hypothesis. Therefore, there is no enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis.
B. Reject the alternative hypothesis.
C. Reject the null hypothesis. Therefore, the mean fat content per serving of the peanut butter is not
equal to 15 grams. In fact, it is greater than 15 grams.
D. No decision can be made because of insufficient data.
B. Solve problem below. Show the complete solution. (10 points)
In a plant nursery, the owner thinks that the length of mongo seedlings in a box sprayed with a new kind
of organic fertilizer has an average height of 25 cm after three days. One researcher randomly selected 35
mongo seedlings and calculated the mean height of 28 cm and the standard deviation was 8 cm. Is it safe
to say that the mongo seedlings grow taller with the use of the new kind of organic fertilizer? Test the
hypothesis using α =0.01 .
