sit on. Normally all of the furniture is taken out of his room so that his girlfriend won't have anything to sit on.
3/ Ted Jones is a fellow countryman. He has never left his home village until he got into university. It is the first time
that he has ever heard of this trick. He showed his annoyance and said to other students that "I am sure that it won't
happen to me".
4/ "I will lock up my room." Other students laughed at his confident announcement. "I will lock up my room ". All
other students laughed at his confidence.

but his door room was gone.
UNIT 2

3/ He came to the party after it had started for about 10 minutes/ After the party had started for about 10 minutes,
he came/ 10 minutes after the start of the party, he came/ He arrived after the party had started for about 10
minutes.
4/ A serious accident happened because of the carelessness of the driver/ The driver's carelessness had caused that
serious/ disastrous accident.
EXERCISE II
(1) Smashing Stereotypes (Phá vỡ các định kiến)
In a study titled Male and Female Drivers: How different are they? Professor Frank McKenna of the University of
Reading.
(2) Looked at the accident risk between men and women (Hãy xem xét rủi ro tai nạn giữa đàn ông và phụ nữ)
He found that men drive faster, (3) commit more driving violations, and (4) are more inclined to drink and drive. They
look for thrills behind the wheel, while women seek independence. And, although anecdotal evidence might (5)
suggest otherwise, women are not starting to drive as aggressively as men.
The question of whether, as drivers, women, differ from men is important, because it could affect insurance (sự bảo
hiểm; hợp đồng bảo hiểm) premiums (phí bảo hiểm), (6) which are closely geared to accident statistics.
Despite the increase in women drivers, McKenna's researchers found no evidence that this is (7) changing accident
patterns. It seems that age is far more important than gender in the car. It is the biggest single factor (8) in accident
patterns.
And, while inexperienced new drivers of both sexes (9) are more likely to be involved in accidents, the study found
striking new evidence to confirm that young men drive less safely than any other group.
The survey shows that men and women aged 17 to 20 are most likely to be involved in bend accidents-men almost
twice as often-but the difference decreases as driver’s mature.
EXERCISE III:
1/ After realizing he was unreliable, she decided to break up with him. Knowing that he was untrustworthy, she
decided to say goodbye to him/ to take leave of him.
2/ Not until yesterday did they send us the document for response.
3/ If I had known that she didn't come, I wouldn't have waited for her for so long.
4/ Remember to take some money on you in case you want to buy something more.
- Climate change in Russia’s Arctic tundra: biến đổi khí hậu ở vùng lãnh nguyên Bắc Cực của Nga
It is one of the world’s last great wildernesses (hoang mạc), a 435-mile-long peninsula (bán đảo) of lakes and
squelching (òng ọc) tundra (lãnh nguyên) stretching (trải dài) deep into the Arctic Ocean.
For 1,000 years, the indigenous (bản xứ) Nenets people have migrated (di trú) along the Yamal peninsula (bán đảo).
In summer they wander (lang thang) northwards (về hướng Bắc) , taking their reindeer (tuần lộc) with them. In
winter they return southwards.
But this remote (xa xôi) region of north-west Siberia is now under heavy threat from global warming. Traditionally
the Nenets travel across the frozen River Ob in November and set up camp in the southern forests around Nadym.
These days, though, this annual winter pilgrimage (cuộc hành hương) is delayed. Last year the Nenets, together with
many thousands of reindeer (tuần lộc), had to wait until late December when the ice was finally thick enough to
cross.
