ASSIGNMENT FOR MODULE 4 LESSON 1

FORENSIC3/L
QUESTION:

1. What are the two most often used methods of glass analysis?

The two most often used methods of glass analysis are the flotation and the immersion
methods are best used to determine a glass fragment’s density and refractive index,
respectively. The latter involves immersing a glass particle in a liquid medium whose refractive
index is varied until it is equal to that of the glass particle.

2. How are the Becke lines used to analyze glass evidence?

The Becke line is a “halo” that can be seen on the inside of the glass on the left, indicating
that the glass has a higher refractive index than the liquid medium. The Becke line as seen
on the right is on the outside of the glass, indicating just the opposite.

3. What simple property is used to identify glass and match it to glass at a crime
scene?

To identify glass and match it to glass at a crime scene one method to determine if glass
evidence matches glass found at a crime scene is to compare the refractive index of the
evidence glass to the refractive index of the glass from the crime scene. Car dealers and
manufacturers of glass have databases that contain the refractive indexes of their products.

4. How can Comparison of glass fragments help in Crime Scene Investigation?

Glass fragments at a crime scene should always be collected and analyzed because several
clues can be gathered about the events that occurred during the crime. Fragments of glass
from headlights at a hit-and-run scene can leave clues about the unknown vehicle. Also, glass
fragments can help police determine which direction.

5. Describe the glass pattern when a bullet penetrates a panel of glass?

Bulletproof glass, ballistic glass, transparent armor, or bullet-resistant glass is a strong and
optically transparent material that is particularly resistant to penetration by projectiles. Like
any other material, it is not completely impenetrable. It is usually made from a combination of
two or more types of glass, one hard and one soft.
