CATCH-UP FRIDAYS TEACHING GUIDE

I. General Overview
Catch-up Subject: Health Education Grade Level: 6
Quarterly Theme: Drug Education Sub-theme: Gateway drugs
Time: Date:
II. Session Outline
Session Title: “Good for your health”
Session At the end of the session, learners will be able to:
Objectives: a) define key concepts about gateway drugs;
b) understand the negative effect of gateway drugs in our health;
and
c) promote on how to avoid using drugs.
Key Concepts:  "Gateway drugs" refers to the theory that the use of certain
substances, typically considered less harmful or less addictive,
can lead individuals to experiment with more potent or
dangerous substances. The idea is that using these initial
substances may open the metaphorical "gateway" to the use of
more serious drugs.
 Gateway drugs have included substances like alcohol, tobacco,
and marijuana. The theory suggests that individuals who use
these substances may be more likely to progress to using
harder drugs such as cocaine, heroin, or methamphetamine.
 Gateway drugs is a subject of debate among researchers and
experts in the field of substance abuse. Some argue that there
isn't sufficient evidence to support the idea that certain
substances directly cause individuals to move on to using
harder drugs.
 They suggest that other factors, such as social environment,
genetics, and individual psychology, may play a more
significant role in determining whether someone progresses to
more serious drug use.
