THOMAS MALONE: As most of you are probably very well aware, the popular media have
recently been full of worries about AI taking jobs away from people. But the question of
how AI and other kinds of information technologies will actually affect jobs is much more
subtle than many people realize. For instance, previous waves of technology destroyed
jobs in agriculture and other industries, but all those jobs were later replaced by new jobs
that were hard for people to even imagine before they appeared.
To help us think about this issue with respect to AI, we’ll first hear from Professor David
Autor, who’s done some of the leading economic research on this question. And then
Professor Daniela Rus will return to give us her views on this question as a technologist.
