Energy

Energy

Energy is the ability to do

work meaning it makes things
happen.

Energy is measured in units

called joules (J).

Types of Energy
Kinetic Energy
Kinetic energy is the energy of
movement. The faster the object
moves, the more kinetic energy it has.
Heat Energy
Heat energy is the energy caused by
particles vibrating faster, therefore
causing objects to gain temperature.
Light Energy
Light energy is the only type of energy we can see
with our eyes and is released by the object.
Sound Energy
Sound energy is the energy caused by vibrating particles
travelling from one place to another. It is detected by our
ears.
Electrical Energy
Electrical energy is the energy
carried by electricity due to charged
particles.
Potential Energy
Potential energy is energy that has the ‘potential’ to do
work, therefore it is stored energy.
Potential energy can take many different forms:
 Chemical
 Gravitational
 Elastic
 Nuclear
When released, it turns into other forms of energy.
Chemical Energy

Chemical energy is stored energy in the

chemical bonds of all substances. The
energy is released by chemical reactions.
Gravitational Potential Energy
Gravitational potential energy is stored energy of an object
when it is high above the ground. The higher the object is
above the ground, the more gravitational potential energy the
object has.
Elastic Potential Energy
Elastic potential energy is stored energy possessed by
objects that are compressed, twisted, flexed, stretched or
wound up.
Nuclear Energy
Nuclear energy is stored energy inside the nucleus of an
atom and is released by nuclear reactions.
