ASSIGNMENT 1 (CHAPTER 2 & 3)

Submission hardcopy at my office (A103) before 15

November 2021 (12pm)

1. 25 kg water initially at 200kPa and 300 °C is contained in a piston-cylinder device fitted

with stops. The water is allowed to cool at constant pressure until it exists as a saturated
vapor and the piston rests on the stops.

a) Determine change of internal energy during the process, in MJ (Answer: -6.99 MJ).

b) Sketch the process on a T-v diagram with respect to the saturation line.

2. Methane at gauge pressure of 9.9 MPa and temperature, 300K is heated at isobaric
condition until its volume has increased by 85%.

a) Determine the final temperature using ideal gas equation of state (Answer: 555K) and the
compressibility chart (Answer: 459 K).

b) Estimate the percentage of error.

3. A piston cylinder device initially contains 0. 13 m3 of nitrogen gas. The nitrogen is

expanded polytropically with n = 1.25 from 130 kPa and 120 °C to 100 kPa and 100 °C.
Determine the boundary work done during this process (Answer: 3.6 kJ).

4. Nitrogen gas to 150 kPa and 40 °C initially occupies a volume of 0.025 m3 in a rigid
container equipped with a stirring paddle wheel. After 10 kJ of paddle wheel work is done on
nitrogen, what is the final temperature (Answer: 646K)?
