EMPIS Material B7A13 identifies free-machining chromium-nickel steel bar, similar to UNS S30300 (AISI 303) and UNS
S30323 (AISI 303 Se) or ASTM A 581/581M, as follows:

(1) The percentage of phosphorus, sulfur and selenium shall be any one of the following combinations with the
stipulation that EMPIS Materials B7A13A2, A3 and C shall be selenium free:
a- Sulfur 0.15 - 0.40 with phosphorus 0.04 maximum.
b- Selenium 0.15 - 0.40, with phosphorus 0.20 maximum, and sulfur 0.04 maximum.
c- Sulfur 0.10 max, with phosphorus 0.17 max, and with total of phosphorus and sulfur not less than 0.18.
d- Sulfur 0.10 max, with phosphorus 0.17 max, with selenium 0.15 - 0.35.
(2) Optional with manufacturer.
(3) Molybdenum 0.60 max, at manufacturer's option.

The heat analysis (formerly ladle analysis) made by the manufacturer to determine the percentages of the elements
required under this specification shall be reported to the purchaser or his representative in a certificate of test when
specified on purchase order or otherwise.
A product analysis (formerly check analysis) may be made by the purchaser from a sample representing each melt. The
chemical composition thus determined shall conform to the requirements of this specification within the AISI standard
permissible variation for product analysis.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Process - Shall be made by the electric furnace process.
Imperfections - Shall be free from injurious external and internal imperfections of a nature which will interfere with the
purpose for which it is intended.
Surface finish – Surface finish roughness of EMPIS Material B7A13C3 shall be 50 microinches root mean square average
(rms) or less.

(5) Out-of-round shall be the difference between the maximum and minimum diameters of the bar, measured at
the same cross section.
(6) Out-of-square shall be the difference in the two dimensions at the same cross section of a square bar, each
dimension being the distance between opposite faces.
(7) Size tolerances for rounds in the size range of 1/4 to 5/16 inch, inclusive, and for rounds in the size range of
1/4 inch to approximately 5/8 inch which shall be produced on rod mills in coils, are not shown.
(8) Variations in size of coiled product made on rod mills shall be greater than size tolerances for product made on
bar mills.
(9) Squares in this size shall not be produced as hot-rolled product.

(10) Size tolerances shall be over and under as shown in the above table. Also, rounds can be produced to
tolerances all over and nothing under, or all under and nothing over, or any combination of over and
under, if the total spread in size tolerance for a specified size is not less than the total spread shown
in the table.
(11) When it is necessary to heat-treat or heat-treat and pickle after cold-finishing, size tolerances shall be
double those shown in the table.
(12) Cold-finished bars over 4 inches in diameter shall be produced; size tolerances for such bars are not
included herein.

CERTIFICATE OF TEST:
When requested, the supplier shall submit promptly to the purchaser at the point of delivery a certificate of test showing the
results of tests for chemical analysis and properties required by this specification. This certificate shall be addressed to
the section, unit, or person specified on the purchase order, and shall contain the EMPIS designation, the purchase
order number, and the quantity shipped so that the certificate may be identified with the shipment.

PACKING AND MARKING:


All material shall be separated by size for shipment, and carefully packed in accordance with ASTM A 700 in such a
manner to avoid damage or loss during shipment. When lift size is not specified on the purchase order, standard AISI
lift will be acceptable. .Each shipment shall be legibly marked with the weight, the purchase order number, and the
EMPIS designation.
