CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Substance abuse resulting in extremely fragile health conditions, distress or inability to fulfill personal

responsibilities manifest as repeated and repeated use of substances leading to adverse health and psychosocial

consequences especially in young people.

Drugs and drug abuse have many negative consequences including poor memory, poor performance, high

school dropout rates, reduced cognition, expulsion from school, early pregnancy HIV, poor relationships with

parents, teachers, siblings and peers (Softkenya.com, 2011).

The prevalence of drug dependence among adolescents poses a significant public health challenge

worldwide, with significant impacts on individual well-being, social cohesion and economic productivity

Despite communication efforts to control it address this issue, adolescent substance use and abuse rates remain

alarmingly high.

Adolescence is a critical developmental period of greater vulnerability to initiation of substance use

and obesity. Individuals experience severe physical, psychological, and social emotional changes during this

transition, making them particularly vulnerable to experimenting with drugs and alcohol so understanding the

factors that contribute to adolescent drug dependence is important and have developed effective preventive

intervention strategies tailored to their specific population-specific needs. (National Library of Medicine, 2008)

This study seeks to examine the complex network of factors that contribute to adolescent drug dependence.

Using existing literature and empirical evidence, the study aims to shed light on

2
the role of genetic predisposition, family dynamics, peer influence, mental health comorbidity, and

environmental factors influence plays a role in adolescents’ susceptibility to substance abuse.

By explaining why these factors occur, researcher seeks to address important gaps in understanding of

adolescent drug dependence in order to provide a basis for evidence-based interventions that aims to reduce

substance use and improving positive outcomes for adolescents. Finally, by addressing the root causes of

adolescent drug use, it can work to create a safe and supportive environment for the next generation.

Statement of the Problem

Adolescent drug dependence is a major public health problem that is important on personal and social

well-being. The general problem of the study is to determine the predisposing causes adolescence drug

dependency among adolescence in selected Barangays in Dinalupihan, Bataan in the first quarter of the year

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

related to the one being studied yet not fully covered. Other angles, variables or aspects can be given attention

which were not accommodated by this study.

4
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study will focus on the predisposing causes of drug dependency among adolescents of Selected

Barangays in Dinalupihan, Bataan. Specifically, the study will target the youth in the specific age range of 13-

18 years to ensure that it covers adolescence and drugs dependency. The study will examine a variety of factors
