1. If v ( t )=120 cos (377 t+ 45 °) V and i (t )=10 cos ( 377 t−10° ) A .Calculate the instantaneous
power and the average power.
Answer: p ( t ) =344.2+600 cos ( 754 t +35 ° ) W
Average power¿ 344.2 W
2. For the circuit in figure 1, let I =4 ∠ 35 ° A rms, and find the average power supplied:
a) by the source; (655.32 W)
b) to the 20 Ω resistor; (320 W)
c) to the load. (335.32 W)
Find the apparent power being supplied :
d) by the source; (800 VA)
e) to the 20 Ω resistor; and (320 VA)
f) to the load. (568.3 VA)

3. Obtain the power factor for each of the circuits in Figure 2. Specify each power factor as
leading or lagging.

impedance Z for the circuit in Figure 3.

kVA at a leading pf of 0.9 and 900 W at unity pf.

6. An industry has the following 3 major loads:
A motor rated at 4 hp, 0.8 pf lagging,
A heater rated at 1.5 kW, 1.0 pf,
Eight 110- W lightbulbs, and
a) Determine the total complex power
b) Calculate the real and reactive power.
c) Obtain the overall power factor.
Answer: (a) STotal =6.1285+ j2.796 kVA
(b) Ptotal=6.1285 kW ∧Qtotal =2.796 KVAR
