Shanghai Expo 2010
In 2010, the city of Shanghai hosted the largest, most spectacular and most
expensive world’s fair ever. Held in a country currently experiencing a level of
urban growth unparalleled in history, Shanghai Expo was given the theme ‘Better
City, Better Life’.
Shanghai chose ‘harmony’ to interpret the theme of ‘Better City, Better Life’.
Multi-million-dollar pavilions entertained their visitors with ideas for creating and
maintaining harmonies between ‘man and man’, ‘man and nature’, ‘past and
future’, the subthemes of the event.

The theme chosen by the event’s organizers was “Better City, Better Life,” which
signified the increasingly important role of urbanization in the 21st century and
also highlighted and promoted Shanghai as one of the world’s great metropolises.
● The tallest structure at the Expo, is dubbed "The
Oriental Crown" because of its resemblance to
an ancient Chinese crown.
● The architectonic feature of the building was
inspired by the Chinese roof bracket known as
the dougong as well as the Chinese ding vessel.
● It symbolizes the unique charm of Chinese
architecture and the unity and strength.
● The ding was a vessel used by Chinese
emperors to make offers to the gods. It
represents the union between heaven and earth.

● The structure was built with a strong emphasis on sustainable and energy-saving practices with the
exterior offering thermal insulation and natural ventilation. The inverted pyramid design and the
lower courtyard offers a large overhang for self-shading.
● A high-tech rooftop garden contains modern landscaping techniques and technology including
rainwater harvesting techniques
