As part of a school project on food, your teacher has asked you to explain how important food is
in your life.

You could include some following in you explanation:

 Your own personal likes and dislikes


 How important a healthy diet is to you
 What your involvement is in the growing, preparation and cooking of food
 How important food is for special family events and festivals

example in art, sport or science.

Try to show how the difficulties and successes encountered affect the person.

You should consider:

 The genre of the film, e.g. comedy, musical, sci-fi, documentary, etc.
 The elements which help to make it great, e.g. the screenplay, the setting, the special
effects, the actors’ performances, etc

4. Write a story in which an animal plays an important part.

Your animal may be a pet, wild animal or even an imaginary animal, but the story needs to have
an effective plot and a clear ending. Try to show the emotions of the animal and how they
change as the story develops.

5. Write an article for your school magazine about the importance of school trips and visits.

You could include some of the following in your article:

 The benefits for students of being taken out of the classroom


 The trips and visits you think would be interesting and enjoyable, and why
 How visiting other places can help you and your friends develop your understanding of the
world.

6. Write a story which begins with two people waiting for someone.

You should consider:


 The people who are waiting – are they friends, members of a family or do they work
together?
 The setting – where are they waiting?
 What happens when the person they are waiting for arrives or does not arrive?

7. Some people believe that dangerous sports like rock climbing should be banned. Do you agree?
Write an essay giving your opinion.

Thing to consider:

 Examples of dangerous sports


 Reasons why some people take part in dangerous sports.
 Reasons why some people feel dangerous sports should be banned.

8. Write a story about a person meeting someone whom they have not seen for a long time.

You should consider:

 Where they meet


 What memories they have
 How they have both changed
 What has happened since they last met

9. Imagine that you have been to an exhibition at a science museum recently. Write a review of the
exhibition for your school magazine.

You could include some of the following in your review:


 What you learned
 What you enjoyed / didn’t enjoy
 Whether you would recommend the exhibition.

10. Write a letter to a friend, describing a difficult journey you had to make.

You could consider:


 Where were going, and why
 Whether you were alone or with people
 What happened during the journey
 Why it was difficult

11. Your head teacher has recently expressed the view that learning music at school is a waste of
time.
Write a letter to your head teacher, giving your opinion on learning music at school.

You could include some of the following in your letter:

 The advantages of music lessons


 The disadvantages of music lessons – for example, the cost for instruments
 Whether the school should invest in music education.

12. Imagine you managed to stop something that could have been dangerous to people from
happening. Write a diary entry about it.

You should consider:


 What the situation was
 What could have happened
 What you did
 How you felt

13. Some people think that it is irresponsible to do dangerous or risky activities. Other people think
that these activities are exciting and great experiences to have. What do you think?

Write an essay giving your opinion.

You could include some of the following:

 Examples of risky activities


 What can go wrong
 How people benefit from them

14. Write about a time when you met someone new who made a strong impression on you.
You could consider:

 Where were you?


 Who did you meet?
 Were you alone or with other people?
 Why did the person make a strong impression on you?

15. Carlos is walking home along a tree-lined road. Darkness is already falling. Soon, the only light
will come from street lamps. Apart from Carlos, the road is empty … or so he thinks. Suddenly, he
hears a strange, shrill voice coming from the darkness behind the trees.

Continue the story. Do not copy out the paragraph above.


You should consider:
 What the voice says
 How Carlos reacts
 What happens to Carlos next.

16. Write a letter to your local newspaper about the problem of litter in your local area.

You could include some of the following in your letter:

 Where people drop litter and why they do it


 What can be done about it by individuals or groups of people
 Why people should take more care of their environment.

You may wish to add some of your own ideas, including experiences that you have had.

17. Write a story about arriving in a new place and meeting someone for the first time.

You should consider:

 The place where both meet


 The person – their appearance and their character
 What happens after you meet

18. Imagine you have visited a school with some of its facilities underground. Write a recount of your
visit.

You could include some of the following:

 Information about which of the school’s facilities are underground


 What teachers and students at the school say about them
 The benefits and challenges of locating a school under the ground

19. Something unexpected happens to Esperanza and her family. Continue the story.

You could include some of the following in your story:

 What happens to Esperanza and her family


 How it changes their lives
 How they feel
20. Look at this quotation from the text: ‘I want to explain what I did, and with whom. And where,
and when and why. What happened, and what happened next.’
Write your own story about someone who is hiding a big secret.

You could continue Nora’s story, or write about yourself or about someone else.

21. Write an article for a magazine describing a sporting event or entertainment event that is about
to happen in your country.

 You need to decide what it is, for example cycling, running, swimming, skiing, music, art or
your own idea.
 You need to tell the reader when and where the event will take place.
 You need to describe the details, for example where it will be, who is involved and why it is
important

Remember to use presentation and layout to organise the information clearly.

22. Write the beginning of a story with a character who has a special gist or a special power.

You should consider:


 The setting (e.g. in a city, a village, a dessert, somewhere else)
 What special gift or power your character has (e.g. the ability to fly, the ability to see into
the future, invisibility)
 How the character uses the power

23. A website for teenagers has posted an article arguing that teenagers today are too interested in
fashion and image.

Write a response to the article, arguing your point of view.

You could include some of the following:


 Whether you think the point about fashion and image is fair or unfair, and why
 Why some teenagers are interested in image and fashion
 What else teenagers may be interested in.

You may wish to add some of your own ideas, including experiences that you have had.

24. A young person from another planet comes to your school. Write a story from their point of
view.

You should consider:


 The reactions of the young person from another planet to the new surrounding
 Their reactions to the new place
 The reactions of your teachers and the other learners to them.
25. Pocket parks are one way that local communities can improve the environment in towns and
cities.
What could improve the environment of your area? Write an article for your school’s magazine
explaining how this could be done.

You may want to think about:

 Different types of pollution


 Recreation facilities
 Transportation

26. You are on holiday when you met someone you have not seen for a long time. Write an email to
your best friend at home describing the meeting.

Think about:

 Why you know the person


 How you felt when you saw the person
 What happened next

27. You have been asked to write an article for your school magazine about a new skill that you have
been developing either in school or outside of school.

You should think about:

 What the skill is and how you have been developing it


 Where and when you use the skill
 How you could develop the skill further in future.

28. You have decided to enter a writing competition in an online magazine. Write a story with the
title ‘The Message’. Your story should be about one or more characters who must deliver
important message to someone face to face.

You should think about:

 What the message is and who the characters who deliver it are
 Who the message is for and why it is important
 The journey the characters make to deliver their message.
