1. Every summer, the Yulin Dog Meat Festival is held in Yulin, a city located in China’s Guangxi
province. Having been held for several years, the event has drawn criticism from animal rights supporters
all around the world.
An old tradition in ancient China, eating dog meat during the hottest months of the summer is
believed to be able to bring luck and health and even to fight off disease. Started in 2009, the festival is a
ten-day-long affair in which up to ten thousand dogs are eaten. In order to prepare the animals for cooking,
they are often slaughtered in inhumane* ways by being clubbed over the head in public or being boiled or
skinned alive. Moreover, many of the dogs are transported in dirty, terrible conditions, and some even still
have collars, which means they may be stolen pets.
According to Humane Society International (HSI), about ten million dogs have been killed for their
meat over the years in China, since prior to 2020, it was not against the law to eat dog meat. Due to the
spread of COVID-19, China has passed a law banning the consumption* of wildlife. Shenzhen, a city in
southeastern China, furthermore forbade eating animals raised as pets, such as dogs and cats. Hopefully,
this can influence other parts of China and help to end this cruel festival once and for all.

2. In the US, nine billion chickens are raised and killed for human consumption* each year. Often called
“broilers*,” they are raised in large, windowless sheds, where the lighting is designed to force them to eat
as much as possible. As a way to meet demand and keep production costs down, genetic* selection and
drugs for promoting growth are used to make the birds grow faster. Nowadays, chicks only need to reach
six weeks to be “processed”—weighing only one-fifth of what they used to in 1950. What’s even worse,
trends in how people enjoy chicken have forced suppliers to raise chickens with thicker breasts and fatter
wings. Many of these chickens actually have problems in their legs due to these changes. Moreover, how
they are slaughtered is also very inhumane*. Chickens are often caught by grabbing them by their feet and
pushing them into small drawers, causing broken bones and limbs. Once they arrive at the
slaughterhouse*, they are dumped out of the drawers and hung upside down in chains—further hurting
their already broken legs. Then their throats are cut open by a machine and the bodies are placed in boiling
hot water to remove their feathers. The entire process is cruel and only done for the sake of feeding our
greedy population. So, maybe you can think twice next time you have a choice between a chicken or
vegetarian meal.

十一 、 混合題(素養題)(2 小題,每格 0 分,共 0 分)
1.
Want to take a selfie with an elephant? Just type the key words
“elephant ride” and you will find millions of photos in which people
are riding elephants, washing them, and patting their trunks.
However, the World Animal Protection (WAP) group claims that
this activity is helping to fuel a rise in the number of elephants
captured from the wild and kept for entertainment. After examining
220 venues and 3,000 elephants in Thailand between 2014 and
2016, WAP found only 200 elephants living in acceptable
conditions, which they define as having no direct interaction with
humans: elephants are only observed from a distance.
According to the WAP report, the number of elephants used in
tourism in Thailand is twice as high as that in all other countries
combined. From 2012 to 2016, more than 30 million tourists visited
Thailand, 40% of whom said they had ridden an elephant or were
planning to do so. The good news is that about 160 travel
companies have already promised to stop selling tickets to or
promoting tourist attractions offering elephant shows and rides.
Daniel Turner, associate director for tourism at Born Free, says
that interaction with captive* animals such as riding elephants or
swimming with dolphins should be stopped. These activities can
have an impact on the animals and also risk people’s safety. So, do
you still want a selfie with an elephant?
註:captive 被囚禁的
(1) According to the WAP research, which of the following is the percentage of captive elephants living in
acceptable living conditions in Thailand?
(A) 6.7%. (B) 18.5%. (C) 28.3%. (D) 40.0%.
(2) What is the author’s intention in asking readers “So, do you still want a selfie with an elephant?” at the
end of the passage?
(A) To promote the rising popularity in wildlife experience.
(B) To discourage the growing interest in activities with elephants.
(C) To encourage the fascinating experience of interacting with wild animals.
(D) To eliminate the spreading doubts of raising elephants in private venues.
(3) What is the reason why WAP and others are against elephant riding and activities with captive animals?
Find ONE sentence in the last paragraph that best indicates the reason. Write the WHOLE sentence.

2. The Circle Circus is in town for two weeks of performances, arousing excitement and curiosity among
townspeople. Yet, this morning, a great number of posters appeared everywhere around the town, including
many posted outside the circus. Here’s the poster:
Stop the Abuse! Save the Elephants!
The Cruelest Show on Earth!

The following are the cruel facts you should know before you buy a
ticket to the circus.
 Baby elephants are taken away from their mothers by the circus
Trainers separate baby elephants from their mothers at around 21
months old. In the wild, elephants stay with their mothers for a long
time. Females stay with their moms for their entire lives, but males
leave when they become teenagers.
 Elephants’ spirits are broken by the circus
In the early “training” stage, baby elephants are forced to stand on a
concrete floor for 23 hours per day. No lying down or turning around
is allowed. What’s worse, this “training” lasts for six months!
 Elephants are abused with ropes, bullhooks, and electric prods
Elephants suffer and cry out. Yet no one helps them because circuses
or venues putting on animal shows are not monitored* by any kind of
agency.
 Elephants spend their lives in abuse, chains, and boxcars

(1) In the second bullet point on the poster, why does the author add quotation marks to the word
“training”?
(A) To show respect.
(B) To show support.
(C) To show agreement.
(D) To show disapproval.
(2) Which TWO of the following statements give concrete examples of how elephants suffer in the circus?

解答 (1)D (2)BC (3)The following are the cruel facts you should know before you buy a ticket to the
circus.

1. (A) This was only possible because of a new president who promoted business and ignored concerns about
environmental destruction.
(B) Sadly, it may already be too late to reverse the harmful effects of global warming, which has already
been developing for centuries due to the pollution of industries.
(C) While forest fires have occurred naturally for thousands of years during hot, dry months, it is also true
that human expansion is increasingly a leading cause of fires.
(D) Certain iconic Australian animals like the koala were especially hurt in recent fires, and many that
were rescued still ended up dying due to their injuries.
Forest fires have featured in many news stories in recent years. __①__ In the United States, for
example, it is estimated that 85% of fires are caused by humans. These causes range from forgotten
campfires to incorrect equipment use, dropped cigarettes, and purposeful fire-starting. The 2019 Amazon
rainforest fires, for example, were caused by cattle farm owners and loggers*, who wanted to clear land for
their businesses. __②__ The recent Australian wildfires were also thought to have been caused and made
worse by humans. The fires raged across Australia and in the process killed about one billion animals,
while destroying the habitats of any animals that survived. __③__ Although many people have donated*
money and assisted the Australian government in trying to solve the wildfire crisis, the sad truth is that the
fires would likely not have even begun without the unstopped growth of human activities. __④__ With
temperatures rising each year, we might see more natural disasters like wildfires and rising sea levels.
These disasters cause a vicious cycle*, and with fewer trees on the planet, global warming will happen
even faster. It is up to the younger generations to develop creative solutions to help slow this process and
finally to prevent it.

Plastic ends up in the ocean for a variety of reasons. Litter is one major reason because plastic trash
on the street eventually finds its way into drains. These drains lead into rivers and oceans and leak
countless trash into them. __②__ Tiny plastic pieces and ingredients are often too small to be processed by
water treatment facilities and instead are eaten by tiny ocean life forms. This leads to plastic being present
in the ocean food chain, which ends up on our own plates when we consume seafood. The effect of all this
plastic waste in the ocean is that millions of sea creatures and sea birds die every year due to plastic
garbage. Sometimes, fish and birds might mistakenly consume plastic and die from the poisonous
chemicals or from choking. Other times, animals might get entangled* in plastic waste and become
severely injured or unable to move. In sensitive parts of the ocean that are home to coral* species, plastic
waste has also been shown to increase the amount of disease among coral. __③__ Dead oceans in turn
cause problems for land animals like us who rely on the sea for food and resources.
Finally, plastic waste in the ocean is even bad for land animals and humans who visit the beach. Large
amounts of garbage wash up on shores and beaches, which can be dangerous for children and pets playing
on the sand. __④__ By reducing plastic waste, we can help save our already endangered oceans and make
our own lives safer in the process.
