ABSTRACT

The study was conducted to determine the level of awareness and preparedness of

farmers on their job’s safety precautions. A total of Eighty-nine (89) farmers from

six Puroks of Barangay Patar, Agno, Pangasinan were the respondents of the

study. The study seeks to determine the level of awareness and preparedness of

farmer on their job’s safety. The research objective include profiling the

respondents, assessing their level of awareness and preparedness of farmers on

their job’s safety precautions, and exploring the relationship between awareness

and preparedness. The descriptive correlation method of research was used in the

study. The researcher used questionnaire checklist to determine the level of

awareness and preparedness of farmers on their job’s safety. Findings reveal that

most of the respondents are male, majority of the farmers age ranges 20-39 years

old. The findings indicate that the majority of the farmers were vocational degree

holder.

The study reveals that among the hazard indicators, the highest level of awareness

is observed in amputation. On the other hand, the lowest level of awareness is

observed in noise pollution. The study reveals that among the safety precaution

indicators, the highest level of preparedness is observed in bringing drinking

water to avoid heatstroke. On the other hand, the lowest level of preparedness is

observed in wearing gloves when using pesticides. Overall, the respondents

exhibit a relatively frequent practice of preparedness in accordance to their level

of awareness. Analyzing the relationship between awareness and preparedness

base on demographic variable, the study finds a significant difference in the level
of awareness and preparedness based on age and educational attainment. This

suggest that farmers of different ages and educational attainment demonstrate

different level of awareness. Now withstanding, significant exist between the level

of awareness of farmers regarding hazards encountered in farming and level of

preparedness of the farmers on safety precautions/ practices in farming.

As a result, several recommendations are formulated. There is a need to develop

and implement targeted safety training programs specifically designed to enhance

the awareness of farmers regarding hazards encountered in farming and to

improve their preparedness on their job’s safety. These programs can cover

various aspects such as proper handling of farming equipment, emergency

procedure, first aid, and awareness of potential hazards. In addition, awareness

campaigns should be conducted to educate farmers on how to prepare themselves

from potential hazards encountered in farming. Through implementing the

recommended strategies, it is possible to improve the safety practices and reduce

the risk faced by farmers during their farming activities in Brgy. Patar, Agno,

Pangasinan.
CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS OF DATA AND INTERPRETATION OF

FINDINGS

This chapter presents the tabulated data regarding the profile of the

respondents such as sex, age and highest educational attainment. It also presents

the statistical results, analysis, and interpretation of the data collected from the

survey questionnaire regarding the level of awareness and preparedness of farmers

on their job’s safety. The data were presented in tabular forms and organized in

accordance with the research questions of the study.

INTERPRETATION OF FINDINGS

Profile of the Respondents

This part of the study deals with the profile of the farmers which includes sex, age,

highest educational attainment, and level of preparedness and awareness of

farmers on their job’s safety precautions. The profile of the Respondents were

obtained through questionnaire-checklist administered to them between the months

of April and May of the year 2023.

Results in table 1 indicates that out of eighty-nine (89) farmer respondents,

seventy (70) or 78.65% of which are male and nineteen (19) or 21.35% are male.

This shows that there are more male farmers than female farmers in the study

area.

Relationship between the levels of awareness of farmers along hazards

encountered in farming and their preparedness on their job’s safety precautions

The level of awareness and preparedness of farmers for their job's safety was thoroughly

investigated in Patar, Agno, and Pangasinan. There is a significant relationship between

the level of awareness of farmers towards hazard encountered in farming and level of

preparedness of farmers on their job’s safety precautions. The results evidently shows

that awareness of the hazards and risks encountered in farming improve their

preparedness in practicing safety precautions in farming. It improves their capability to

respond and recover through safety precautions. Preparing before an emergency incident

plays a vital role in ensuring that the farmers have the necessary equipment, know

where to go, and know how to keep themselves safe when they encounter hazard.

The Practices and Importance of Safety Precaution of Farmers on their Job

Preparedness of farmers in Brgy. Patar about safety precautions in farming.

In preparedness, the indicator “Bring drinking water to avoid heatstroke.” got the

highest weighted mean from Likert scale with 4.87 and is defined in the
description as highly prepared. However, the indicator “wearing gloves when

using pesticides” got the lowest weighted mean from the Likert scale with 3.65

and is defined as moderately. The overall weighted mean is 4.33 which indicates

that preparedness is high within the group of farmer.

Awareness of farmers in Brgy. Patar about safety precautions in farming.

For the awareness, the indicator “Amputation” got the highest weighted mean of

4.60 with description of highly aware. While the indicator “Noise Pollution” got

the lowest weighted mean of 2.65 with the description aware. The overall

weighted mean is 4.24 which indicates that awareness is practiced highly by the

respondents. Difference of the preparedness and awareness of farmers on their

jobs safety precaution according to their demographic profile

Analyzing the relationship between awareness and preparedness base on

demographic variable, the study finds a significant difference in the level of

awareness and preparedness based on age and educational attainment. This

suggest that farmers of different ages and educational attainment demonstrate

different level of awareness.

Preparedness and Awareness of Farmers on their jobs Safety Precaution

According to Age

The findings showed that there is significant difference between the level of

preparedness and their perceive level of awareness regarding the safety precaution

according to age. This suggests that there are is appreciable differences in farmers

of different ages’ level of awareness of safety procedures.

Preparedness and Awareness of Farmers on their jobs Safety Precaution

According to Educational Attainment.

The findings showed that there is significant difference between respondent’s

educational attainment and their educational attainment. The majority of farmers

either had basic knowledge of reading and writing or earned a vocational degree.

Low literacy individuals might benefit from the chance for instruction provided by

official letters. Most farmers were in the mid-age range. Their age, eyesight, and

level of physical activity are all significantly affected by their long-term work-

related injuries. The hearing, physical ability, speed, and reaction of individuals

have decreased. The high awareness of farmers about harmful factors led to

prevention of on-the- job related injuries that occurred due to harmful factors.

This implies that the respondents generally have achieved high academic level. As

shown, the level of education attainment by the respondents is not relatively low.

Based on the findings, the following conclusion were drawn:

1. Majority of the respondents are Vocational Graduate,

2. Most of respondents have a high awareness about hazards encountered in farming

3. Most of respondents have high preparedness in safety precaution practices

4. Analysis of Variance reveals that there is a significant difference between the

profile of respondents and their level of awareness and preparedness.

Recommendation

Based on the conclusions, the following recommendations are formulated:

1. There is a need to develop and implement targeted safety training programs

specifically design to enhance the awareness of farmers regarding hazards

encountered in farming and to improve their preparedness on their job’s safety.
