RESEARC REPORT REVIEW: SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ADOLESCENTS

The research “The Impact of Sleep Deprivation on Academic Performance among

Adolescents” by Alfonsi highlights the importance of sleep in the mental health of adolescents

and how lack of sleep can negatively affect their academic performance.

Adolescence is an essential period for growth and development. During this stage, their

sleep patterns change significantly. However, many of them fail to achieve the required amount

of sleep due to a variety of factors such as a busy schedule, scheduling demands, and the use of

technology. This mismatch between sleep patterns and school schedules can have a serious

impact on their health, well-being, and academic performance.

The study describes a number of research that show the connection between sleep

deprivation and poor academic performance. According to the National Sleep Foundation,

teenagers need approximately 8-10 hours of sleep per night, however the majority of them do not

receive enough sleep. According to the paper, sleep deprivation may affect the brain’s ability to

absorb information, resulting in difficulties with learning, memory, and problem solving. The

paper also provides some practical tips for parents and educators to help teenagers get enough

sleep. These tips include establishing a regular sleep schedule, creating a conducive sleep

environment, limiting screen time before bedtime, and encouraging regular exercise.

In conclusion, educating teenagers the importance of sleep and the necessary amount of

time can help them prioritize sleep. Parents can help through setting clear expectations for screen

time and sleep routines while creating a supportive home atmosphere. In addition, establishing

appropriate sleeping behaviors such as keeping to a consistent sleep schedule and developing a

calm nighttime routine can significantly improve sleep quality.
